Ge Shan Xiang's roots and whole plants can be used as medicine, also known as "Jin Ji Zhao", "Ji Zhao Shen", "Shan Zhu Xiang", etc. It is mainly distributed in Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi and other provinces in China. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that Ge Shan Xiang has the effects of dispelling wind, clearing heat, resolving phlegm, relieving cough, reducing swelling, and alleviating pain. It is mainly used to treat colds, coughs, headaches, abdominal pain, dysentery, hepatitis, rheumatism, hernia, irregular menstruation, bruises, boils, and snake bites.

  1. "Guangxi Medicinal Plant Catalog": Whole plant: Nourishing and strengthening, dispelling wind and promoting qi circulation. Used to treat tuberculosis, stomach pain, heart pain, malaria, dysentery, bruises, and amenorrhea.

  2. "Common Chinese Herbal Medicine Manual of the Guangzhou Army": Root: Promotes blood circulation, relieves blood stasis, promotes qi circulation, relieves pain, relieves cough, and resolves phlegm. Used to treat angina, stomach pain, chronic cough, and snake bites.

  3. "Jiangxi Herbal Medicine": Root: Clears heat, detoxifies, relieves cough, and stops bleeding. Used to treat leukorrhea.

  [The Pharmacological Effects of Ge Shan Xiang]

  1. Antitussive, expectorant, and anti-inflammatory effects

  The distillate of Ge Shan Xiang has a significant antitussive effect on ammonia-induced cough in guinea pigs, and it can promote the elimination of phenol red from the bronchi of mice, indicating a certain expectorant effect. It has a similar inhibitory effect on rat foot swelling inflammation as 0.25% dexamethasone.

  2. Effects on smooth muscle

  The crystal isorhoifolin (Ⅰ) extracted from Ge Shan Xiang root ether extract has a certain spasmolytic effect on rabbit intestine, guinea pig trachea, and rabbit aorta, and it can also inhibit in situ small intestinal peristalsis.

  3. Antibacterial effects

  In vitro antibacterial tests showed that the distillate of Ge Shan Xiang has certain inhibitory effects on Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus pneumoniae, influenza virus, and Klebsiella pneumoniae.
