The Benefits of Mugwort for Women: Warming Meridians and Dispelling Cold and Dampness

January 28, 2024

I believe many of you have heard of mugwort, but few people know its numerous benefits for women. Mugwort is a common herbaceous plant and can usually be harvested in late April.

Mugwort has the function of warming and invigorating meridians, replenishing yang and dispelling cold and dampness! The mugwort during the Dragon Boat Festival has the best ability to warm and heat. When it is made into mugwort velvet and placed close to the body, it emits a warm temperature, stimulates acupoints, accelerates local blood circulation, and dispels cold and dampness in the body.

At the same time, the Dragon Boat Festival is the time when mugwort grows most luxuriantly and has the strongest medicinal properties. The freshly harvested mugwort at this time has extremely strong efficacy, which is the true reason why our Chinese nation has celebrated the festival by "collecting mugwort" for many years.

These harvested mugwort leaves can be used as raw materials for moxibustion. The mugwort sticks can be crushed, impurities removed, purified, and then made into mugwort velvet. After rolling the mugwort velvet into sticks, they can be used for mild moxibustion.

If not rolled into sticks, the mugwort velvet can also be used directly for direct moxibustion, but the purity of the mugwort velvet must reach the highest level.

In addition, there are several points to note when doing moxibustion:

  1. Moxibustion should be done on areas with thin skin and many tendons and bones on the head, chest, and limbs, with a small amount of moxibustion; moxibustion can be done on areas with thick skin and abundant muscles such as the waist and abdomen, shoulders, and thighs, with a larger amount of moxibustion.

  2. For those with a strong physique, a larger amount of moxibustion can be done; for those with chronic diseases, weak physique, the elderly, and children, a smaller amount of moxibustion should be done.

  3. If there is dizziness during moxibustion, moxibustion should be stopped immediately, and the patient should lie flat with the head lower, pay attention to keeping warm, and lightly rest for a moment or drink some warm water. In severe cases, massage the Renzhong, Neiguan, and Zusanli acupoints.

  4. Moxibustion should not be done when one is mentally stressed, sweating heavily, tired, or hungry. Pregnant women in the lumbar sacral region and abdomen should not receive moxibustion.

Mugwort has many benefits. It has antibacterial, antiviral, hemostatic, expectorant, asthma-relieving, sedative, anti-allergic, and liver-protecting and gallbladder-stimulating effects, etc.
