Medicinal Characteristics of Suan Teng Mu

Identification: The leaves are curled, and when flattened, they are inverted ovate to elliptic, 3-5.5cm long and 1-2.5cm wide, with a blunt or slightly concave apex, wedge-shaped base, entire margin, and indistinct lateral veins.

The petiole is short, 5-3mm long. Sometimes, small cylindrical branches of varying lengths and purple-brown color can be seen. The scent is faint and the taste is sour.

Microscopic identification of leaf cross-section: The upper epidermal cells are larger, with varying shapes and sizes, and their outer walls are thickened and keratinized.

The lower epidermal cells are smaller, ranging from circular to flattened square, and their outer walls are thickened and keratinized.

The palisade tissue consists of 1-2 rows of cells of varying lengths and passes through the midvein. The vascular bundles are collateral, surrounded by fiber bundles.

The inner side of the lower epidermis of the midvein has 2-4 rows of thick-walled cells. The leaf parenchyma and thin-walled tissue contain secretory ducts and yellow-brown substances.

It grows in grasslands, shrubs, or understory at altitudes of 100-1800m.

It is distributed in Jiangxi, Fujian, Taiwan, Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, Yunnan, and other regions.

Functions and Indications of Suan Teng Mu

It is used to treat sore throat, gum bleeding, spleen deficiency diarrhea, bruises, and hemorrhoids.
