Chinese medicine "daoshenggen", also known as "liangtoucao", "wulongmao", "dawupa", etc., is the root of the plant Rosa laevigata Michx. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that daoshenggen has the effects of promoting blood circulation and stopping bleeding, dispelling wind and dampness. It is often used for injuries, fractures, irregular menstruation, vomiting blood, nosebleeds, rheumatism, edema, difficulty in urination, and scrofula.

Daoshenggen grows in mountain slopes, thickets, valleys, riversides, roadsides at an altitude of 100-1700 meters, and is distributed in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, Shaanxi, Gansu, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Sichuan, Guizhou, Xinjiang and other places.

Daoshenggen is a shrub that grows up to 1-3 meters tall. The stem is erect or curved in an arch shape, reddish-brown, with hooked flat thorns. Odd-pinnate compound leaves; petioles and leaf axes are scattered with small thorns;

Stipules are linear; there are 5-7 leaflets; the terminal leaflet has a stalk 1-2 cm long, and the lateral leaflets are nearly stalkless; the leaf blades are ovate, elliptic or rhombic-ovate, 3-6 cm long and 1.5-4 cm wide;

The apex is sharply pointed, the base is wide wedge-shaped or nearly circular, the margin has irregular conical sharp serrations or dentate coarse serrations, the lower surface is gray-green, and there are soft hairs or pubescence along the veins of the leaves.
 


 

The umbellate inflorescence is terminal or axillary; the peduncle and pedicel are pubescent; the pollen is pink, with a diameter of 8-10 mm; the sepals are ovate-lanceolate, hairy on the outside. The aggregate fruit is ovate, with a diameter of 5 mm, and red. The flowering period is from April to June, and the fruiting period is from June to August.

The fruit, root, stem, and adventitious root of Rosa laevigata can all be used as medicine. The fruit has the effect of nourishing the kidney and consolidating essence, and can be used for symptoms such as impotence, nocturnal emission, enuresis, and leukorrhea;

The root and adventitious root of daoshenggen have the effects of regulating menstruation, promoting blood circulation, stopping bleeding, and relieving pain. They can be used for injuries, fractures, irregular menstruation, etc., and the stem also has the effect of stopping bleeding.
