The Healing Powers of Da Wupao: A Traditional Chinese Medicinal Plant

Da Wupao is the whole plant of the plant Da Wupao in the family Rosaceae. The roots are dug and harvested in autumn and winter, washed and sliced, then dried in the sun. The whole plant can be harvested all year round. It should be washed, chopped, and dried. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that Da Wupao has the effects of clearing heat, promoting diuresis, stopping bleeding, dispelling wind and dampness, and promoting bone healing.

  Traditional Chinese medicine believes that Da Wupao has the effects of clearing heat, stopping bleeding, and dispelling wind and dampness. It is often used for fever, coughing up blood, nosebleeds, irregular menstruation, external bleeding, dysentery, diarrhea, prolapse of rectum, and rheumatic pain.

  1. "Yunnan Chinese Herbal Medicine": "Clears heat, detoxifies, dispels wind and activates collaterals, stops bleeding and relieves pain. Used to treat colds, high fever, coughing up blood, rheumatic joint pain, early menstruation, diarrhea, gastroenteritis, dysentery, prolapse of rectum, and external bleeding."

  2. "Compilation of Chinese Herbal Medicine": "Clears heat and promotes diuresis. It is mainly used for coughing up blood, nosebleeds, rheumatic bone pain, and fractures."

  [Morphology of Da Wupao]

  Da Wupao is a shrub that grows 2-3m tall. The stem is stout, covered with yellow hairs and scattered short curved thorns. The leaves are alternate, with leaf stalks 3-6cm long, covered with yellow soft hairs;

  The stipules are divided into strips; the leaf blades are leathery, nearly circular, with a diameter of 5-16cm, and 7-9 shallow lobes resembling a palm. The lobes are often divided into 2 shallow lobes or have notches, with a rounded or acute tip, a heart-shaped base, and irregular serrated edges;

  The upper surface has short hairs and dense small projections, and the lower surface is covered with yellow hairs; the primary veins are palmate with 5-7 branches, and the secondary veins are prominent. The inflorescence is a conical or cymose cyme, densely covered with yellow hairs;

  The bracts are elliptical, about 1-1.5cm long, with torn edges; the sepals are ovate, often split at the apex, and covered with yellow hairs on the outside; the petals are slightly longer than the sepals, nearly elliptical, white, and have claws;

  There are many stamens; there are many carpels, attached to the raised receptacle. The aggregate fruit is spherical, up to 1.5cm in diameter, with many red berry-like small drupes. The flowering period is from April to June, and the fruiting period is from August to September.
