The Medicinal Benefits and Cultivation of Gan Sui: A Lesser-Known Herb for Diuresis and Heat Relief

January 27, 2024

When it comes to Gan Sui, many people are not familiar with it because it is not commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine. It is mainly used to promote diuresis and relieve heat, and is a commonly used herb for clearing heat and promoting diuresis. Let's learn about the usage of Gan Sui below.

[Medicinal Value of Gan Sui]

Currently, Gan Sui has been widely used in clinical practice to treat various diseases. From the perspective of clinical applications, Gan Sui is mainly used for the following conditions:

1. It is mainly used to treat chest and abdominal edema. It has the same indications and usage as Qian Niu Zi, but it is only used for patients with strong qi and excessive pathogenic factors.

2. It is used to treat ascites caused by liver cirrhosis. It is often combined with other diuretic herbs such as Ren Shen (Ginseng), Chong Sun Jian (Silkworm Pupa), Hei Qian Niu (Black Hellebore), Chen Xiang (Aquilaria) and Rou Gui (Cinnamon) to achieve good effect in reducing swelling.

3. It is used to treat pleural effusion caused by exudative pleurisy. In the acute phase, if there are symptoms of excess heat, such as hot flashes, pain relief, constipation, dry mouth and thirst, and restlessness, it belongs to the "constrained chest" pattern. The efficacy of Gan Sui alone is not enough, and it should be combined with Da Huang (Rhubarb) and Yuan Ming Fen (Ephedra) to form the Da Xian Xiong Tang formula.

4. It is used to treat edema caused by nephritis (both acute and chronic nephritis). Crush 6g of Gan Sui into powder, put it into the kidneys of a male pig wrapped with bamboo paper soaked in water, and then simmer it over fire. After it is cooked, cut the pig kidneys into 7 slices. Take 1 slice daily, and after taking 4-5 slices, the swelling will start to reduce.

[Cultivation Requirements of Gan Sui]

1. Soil requirements

Gan Sui does not have very strict soil requirements. It can grow normally in all types of soil except for excessively acidic or alkaline soil. However, for higher yield, it is advisable to cultivate Gan Sui in sandy loam or clay loam soil with deep, loose, fertile soil layer, good drainage, and rich in humus.

2. Moisture requirements

Gan Sui is relatively drought-resistant, but excessive drought can inhibit its growth. Therefore, watering should be done according to the dryness of the soil during the growth period. However, if there is continuous rainy weather, timely drainage should be carried out to prevent "root rot" of Gan Sui.

3. Temperature requirements

Gan Sui is cold-resistant and intolerant to heat. It prefers a cool climate. If the ambient temperature exceeds 35°C, it will lead to poor growth of the plants. Therefore, it is best to choose a plot with shading conditions for planting Gan Sui.
