Chishang San: A Bitter but Beneficial Traditional Chinese Medicine

Chishang San is a common traditional Chinese medicine used for clearing heat and detoxifying the body. It has a bitter taste, which is why many people do not like to consume it. However, it has high medicinal value and can be used to treat bruises and injuries.


What is Chishang San?

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that Chishang San has the effects of clearing heat, detoxification, promoting blood circulation, and reducing swelling. It is mainly used to treat dysentery, leukorrhea, heat-induced headaches, irregular menstruation, breast abscesses, and bruises and injuries.

Chishang San is not only used as a medicine, but also in many modern Chinese-style gardens to enhance the traditional Chinese atmosphere.

The flowers and leaves of Chishang San also have some unique markings. In spring, the young branches, leaf stalks, and leaf veins are purplish-red. In summer, the mature leaves are green with rust-red spots in the center and a pale purplish-red edge.

In addition to its color, Chishang San has one major characteristic: a pair of round ears at the base of the leaf, with purple-black markings on top.


How to use Chishang San?

Chishang San has a bitter and astringent taste. It is a mild and balanced traditional Chinese medicine, so many people do not like to drink it.

Chishang San can be taken internally. The recommended method is to decoct the herbs and drink the medicinal juice while discarding the residue. The daily dosage of the dried herbs is 9-159 units, or 15-30 grams of fresh herbs, or an appropriate amount of soaked herbs in alcohol.

If it is only for external use, take an appropriate amount of the dried herbs. Crush the fresh herbs and apply them to the affected area, or grind them into a paste and apply it to the affected area, or soak in vinegar, or boil in water for washing.


Precautions for using Chishang San

Chishang San has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, blood circulation-promoting effects. Modern pharmacological studies have shown that the alcoholic extract of Chishang San has a significant effect on certain strains of dysentery bacteria and has strong antioxidant activity.

For the treatment of mastitis: Crush the whole plant or the potatoes and wild buckwheat, and apply them externally with wine residue.

Precautions: Avoid use in individuals with weak qi and external deficiency; individuals with stagnant qi should consume less, excessive consumption can cause menstrual irregularities in women; pregnant women should be cautious and avoid using the medicine during pregnancy to prevent fetal malformation.
