【Botanical Morphology of Wu Xie Teng】

Wu Xie Teng is a woody vine that can grow up to 4 meters long. The branches and inflorescences are covered with soft hairs. The leaves are opposite; they are oblate, oval, or rectangular, measuring 2.5 to 3 centimeters in length and 1.5 to 4 centimeters in width. The tips are blunt or short-pointed, and the bases are narrow or rounded. Both sides of the leaves are either completely bald or only have soft hairs on the veins. The leaf stalks are 6 to 8 millimeters long and hairy, with clustered glands at the top.

The umbellate inflorescences are axillary, measuring 1.5 centimeters in length. The calyx is 5-lobed, with lobes ovate in shape. The corolla is bell-shaped and yellow, with 5 lobes and a diameter of about 4 millimeters. There are 5 fleshy scales that alternate with the corolla lobes. The stamens are 5, with the filaments fused into a tubular shape. The pistil is broad and blunt, conical, protruding from the stamens. The fruit is a hard achene, about 5 centimeters long and wide at the base. The seeds are ovate, thin and concave, with whorled, white, silky hairs. The flowering period is in July.

In traditional Chinese medicine, Wu Xie Teng is believed to have the effects of clearing heat, cooling blood, promoting pus discharge, reducing swelling, relieving pain, and promoting tissue regeneration. It is used to treat rheumatic pain, sore throat, scrofula, breast abscess, sores, eczema, unidentified swellings, and snake bites, among other conditions.
