Pigweed: Understanding Common Allergens and Their Hazards

January 24, 2024

Spring and summer are good times for people to choose to go outing. Before going outing, everyone should have some understanding of common allergens, such as pigweed, which is one of the things that everyone needs to know about.

Pigweed

Likes wetness and dislikes drought. Pigweed is a shallow-rooted plant that cannot absorb water from the deep layers of the soil. It tends to wilt and wither during the dry autumn season, while pigweed grows luxuriantly in wet areas. It has strong cold resistance.

Mature pigweed can withstand cold winters with temperatures of -3 to -5°C, becoming a perennial pigweed. It grows densely in clusters.

Since pigweed fruits usually scatter on the ground within a radius of 1-1.5 meters around the plant year after year, it forms a densely growing group.

Branching period. This period is actually the period of branch and leaf formation, mainly characterized by vertical growth. When the vertical growth tends to stagnate, the formation of branches and leaves also ends.

From late April to late July, a total of more than 100 days. Its growth law is "slow at both ends and fast in the middle". The daily growth rate of plant height is:

In the early stage, it is 0.08-0.44 cm, in the middle stage it is 0.9-1.35 cm, and in the later stage it is 0.24-0.18 cm. The growth of plant height is 4.5-5.1 times that of crown growth.

Flowering period. The male flowers last for 65-70 days, while the female flowers last for 50-55 days.

During this period, the main growth is horizontal, from July 31st to September 30th, and the growth rate of the crown is 5.5-5.8 times that of the plant height. At the same time, the stems and branches also thicken and elongate rapidly, and the flower organs mature faster.

Hazards of Pigweed

One of the hazards of pigweed is its ability to absorb nutrients. Pigweed generally grows in groups and has strong regenerative and reproductive abilities. It not only makes the soil dry and barren, but also blocks sunlight due to its tall size, making it difficult for other plants to grow and reproduce.

The super strong reproductive ability makes it difficult to eradicate pigweed once it grows.

Did you know what causes sunflower leaf spot and soybean pests? Some of the reasons are caused by pigweed. This is another hazard of pigweed, as it can spread diseases and pests.

When pigweed fruits are mixed with other plants, it can spread rapidly.

For example, cabbage bacterial leaf spot is caused by pigweed.

What to Do with Pigweed Allergy

Allergy is a difficult-to-cure disease. What should you do if you are allergic to pigweed pollen?

Pigweed pollen is the root cause of allergies, so the first thing to do is to avoid contact with pigweed.

Pay attention to dietary hygiene and avoid fish, shrimp, seafood, and spicy foods.

When you encounter pigweed allergy and feel itchy, do not scratch with your hands, as it may worsen the allergic reaction.
