Morphological Characteristics of Ground Squash

1. Ground Squash

Upright semi-shrub. Underground stem single axis creeping. Stem branching from the base.

Leaves opposite or nearly opposite; leaf blade linear, 3-5cm long, 2-5mm wide, with raised midrib on the underside.

Umbel inflorescence axillary; calyx covered with soft hairs on the outside; corolla greenish-white; corolla lobes cup-shaped, triangular-lanceolate, gradually closing, higher than the membrane of the ovary.

Fruit is fusiform, gradually pointed at the tip, swollen in the middle, 5-6cm long, diameter approximately 2cm.

Seeds are flat, dark brown, up to 8mm long, with white silky hairs up to 2cm long. Flowering period is from May to August, fruiting period is from August to October.

2. Groundmelon

It is similar to the original species, with weak stems and fewer branches. The stem usually elongates and twines at the end.

Leaves are linear or linear-lanceolate; flowers are smaller and more numerous. Flowering period is from March to August, fruiting period is from May to October.
