Winterland Three Yellow Decoction: Nourishing Yin and Clearing Heat in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Winterland Three Yellow Decoction, the name of a traditional Chinese medicine formula, comes from the book "Differentiation and Treatment of Warm Diseases" Volume II. It is used to nourish yin and generate fluids, clear heat and purge fire. It is mainly used to treat Yangming warm diseases, yin deficiency caused by pathogenic heat, lack of sweating, and difficulty in urination.

 【Composition】 Ophiopogon japonicus 24g, Coptis chinensis 3g, Reed rhizome juice 100ml (diluted), Pseudostellaria heterophylla 12g, Phellodendron chinense 3g, Honeysuckle dew 100ml (diluted), Rehmannia glutinosa 12g, Scutellaria baicalensis 3g, Glycyrrhiza uralensis 9g.

 【Functions and Indications】 Nourishing yin and generating fluids, clearing heat and purging fire. Winterland Three Yellow Decoction is mainly used to treat Yangming warm diseases, deficiency of yin caused by pathogenic heat, lack of sweating, and difficulty in urination.

 【Dosage】 Boil 800ml of water and reduce to 300ml, divide into two doses. Take it until urination becomes smooth.

【Introduction to Medicinal Materials】

Ophiopogon japonicus: Nourishing yin and generating fluids, moistening the lungs and clearing the heart. It is used for dry cough due to lung dryness, cough and wheezing due to deficiency consumption, thirst due to fluid injury, restlessness and insomnia, internal heat and polydipsia, constipation due to intestinal dryness, and pharyngeal white sore throat. It nourishes yin and generates fluids, moistens the lungs and stops coughing. It is used for less thirst and dry coughing up blood due to deficiency of lung and stomach yin; palpitations and easy fright due to insufficient heart yin, as well as heat injury to body fluids in the late stage of fever, etc.

Coptis chinensis: Clears heat and relieves pain, improves eyesight. It is used for diarrhea and abdominal pain, dysentery, swelling and pain in the female genitalia. It is also used for both cold and heat in the five organs, chronic diarrhea with pus and blood, excessive thirst, extreme fright, diuresis, bone strengthening, gastric and colonic regulation, gallbladder enhancement, and treatment of mouth sores.

Phellodendron chinense: Treats deficiency of yin and excessive heat. It is used to alleviate the damage caused by heat and prevent further harm to yin, rather than having a nourishing effect on yin. When used raw, it has a strong heat-clearing effect, and when stir-fried with saltwater, it can moderate its cold nature and enhance its function of clearing and draining kidney fire.

Scutellaria baicalensis: Clears heat and dampness, drains fire and detoxifies, stops bleeding, and calms the fetus. It is mainly used to treat warm diseases, upper respiratory tract infections, heat in the lungs with cough, damp-heat jaundice, pneumonia, dysentery, hemoptysis, red eyes, restless fetus, hypertension, abscesses, and boils.

Glycyrrhiza uralensis: Tonifies the spleen and boosts qi, clears heat and detoxifies, resolves phlegm and stops coughing, relieves pain, and harmonizes various drugs. It is used for weak spleen and stomach, fatigue and weakness, palpitations and shortness of breath, cough with abundant phlegm, acute abdominal pain and pain in limbs, abscesses and toxic sores, and to relieve the toxicity and strong nature of other drugs.
