The Medicinal Uses and Formulations of Pubaogen: A Chinese Herbal Medicine

Pubaogen is the root of the plant Erianthus comosus in the family Cyperaceae. How is it used? There are some Chinese herbal medicines that you may not know how to use even if you hold them in your hand. What are the formulations of Pubaogen?

Pubaogen is a perennial herbaceous plant, 60-100cm tall, with a short and thick rhizome and long fine rootlets.

The stems are clustered, stout, sharply three-edged, with 2 leaf sheaths at the base and no leaf blades.

The bract is one, an extension of the stem, erect, 3-14cm long.

The spikelets are 2-9, clustered into a head-like shape, falsely axillary, ovoid or elongated-ovoid, 8-16mm long and 4-6mm wide, with numerous flowers;

The scales are elongated-ovoid, 4-5mm long, pale brown, with short tips at the apex, with one central vein and reddish-brown short stripes on both sides;

The lower bristles are 6, about the same length as the achene, with retrorse barbs; the stamens are 3, with linear anthers; the stigma is 3.

The achene is broadly obovate, compressed three-edged, 2-2.5mm long, glossy brown-black when ripe, with inconspicuous wrinkles. The flowering and fruiting period is from May to September.

Pubaogen is used to treat hot lin syndrome, leukorrhea, difficulty in urination, vaginal discharge, and swollen and painful gums.

1. For treating hot lin syndrome and difficulty in urination: Take 30g of Pubaogen, 30g of Shiwei, and 30g of Haijinsha. Decoct and take orally.

2. For treating damp-heat leukorrhea: Take 30g of Pubaogen and 30g of Sanbaicao. Decoct and take orally.

3. For treating toothache caused by stomach fire: Take 15g of Pubaogen, 15g of Kuqiaotou, 15g of Digupi, and 15g of Mugwort. Decoct and take orally.
