Schisandra: Traditional Chinese Recipes for Liver Health

Schisandra is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb that nourishes the kidneys and calms the mind. It can be used as a medicine to treat liver diseases, as well as be used as an ingredient to make various nourishing dishes. Below are some recommended Schisandra recipes for liver health!


Recipe 1: Schisandra Tea

Ingredients: 3-5g of dried Schisandra berries, 0.5-1.5g of green tea, 25g of honey.

Directions: Roast the dried Schisandra berries on low heat until slightly burnt. Brew the roasted Schisandra berries and green tea in boiling water for 5 minutes. Add honey while it's still hot and mix well. Take 1 dose daily, divided into 3 servings and consume it warm.

Benefits: Refreshes the mind, nourishes the kidneys and liver. Suitable for weakness in the legs, tinnitus, mental fatigue, chronic hepatitis, liver deficiency with dizziness, and diminished vision.

Recipe 2: Schisandra and Sour Jujube Kernel Soup

Ingredients: 6g of dried Schisandra berries (crushed), 15g of sour jujube kernels (crushed), 20g of Fuling, 15g of Danshen.

Directions: Take 1 dose daily. Boil in water twice, mix well, and divide into two portions. Take one portion 2 hours before bedtime and the other portion half an hour before bedtime, both consumed warm.

Benefits: Nourishes the heart and calms the mind, treats heart deficiency insomnia and excessive dreaming.


Recipe 3: Schisandra Congee

Ingredients: 10g of dried Schisandra berries, 100g of rice.

Directions: Cook the rice and dried Schisandra berries together on low heat.

Benefits: Schisandra nourishes the liver and kidneys, while rice protects the liver and stomach. Consuming this congee after alcohol intake can reduce the damage to the liver caused by excessive alcohol consumption.

Recipe 4: Schisandra and Lycium Tea

Ingredients: 5g of dried Schisandra berries, 5g of cooked Rehmannia root, 5g of goji berries.

Directions: Crush the dried Schisandra berries, cut the cooked Rehmannia root into small pieces, and put them together with goji berries in a teacup. Brew with boiling water, cover and let it steep for 20 minutes. Drink instead of tea, once in the morning and once before bedtime.
