【Morphology of Pulmonariae Herba】

Pulmonariae Herba (from "Plant Names and Realities") is also known as Clustered Pulmonaria, Variegated Leaf Gentian, or White Deer's Tongue.

It is a perennial twining herb. In the early stage, it has 4 basal leaves, 2 large and 2 small, opposite in a cross shape. The leaves are ovate to elliptic, 3-7.5 cm long and 1.5-3.5 cm wide, with 3 main veins. The upper surface is green with pale yellow-green patches, while the lower surface is reddish-purple. The apex is bluntly rounded or acute, and the base gradually tapers with no petiole.

The stem is slender and creeping, about 70 cm long. It bears opposite triangular to lanceolate leaves, 2-5 cm long and 0.5-2 cm wide. The base is slightly cordate to round, with a short petiole and 3 veins. The flowers are large and solitary in the leaf axils. The calyx tube is 5-lobed, with linear lobes. The corolla is rose-purple, gradually narrowing at the base, and 5-lobed with triangular lobes and slightly protruding truncate appendages between the lobes.

The capsule is long and spherical, pale reddish-purple, with a diameter of about 8 mm. The flowering period is from August to September.
