The leaves are opposite, ovate or elliptic-lanceolate, 3.5-7 cm long, 1-2 cm wide, blunt or gradually pointed at the apex, rounded or nearly cordate at the base, entire, with 3 primary veins, with obvious veins on the back of the leaves, hairy, rough on the upper surface, or with stiff hairs; no stalk or short stalk; stipules broadly ovate.

The flowers are small, unisexual, and monoecious, clustered in the leaf axils, yellow-green; the male flowers have 3-5 lobes, arranged in a clasping arrangement in the buds, the lobes bend inward sharply, forming a ring with hairs on it, and there are 5 stamens; the female flowers have tubular calyx, the stigma is drill-shaped, the fruit is broad-ovate, pointed at the apex, with longitudinal ridges, black, smooth.
