  【Identification】

  Uyao is an evergreen shrub or small tree, reaching a height of 4-5m. The roots are woody, swollen and stout, resembling beads. The bark is grayish-green. The twigs are densely covered with rust-colored short hairs when young, becoming smooth and hairless when old; the stems are tough and not easily broken.

  The base of the leaf is round or broadly wedge-shaped, with smooth and shiny green upper surface except for the midrib, and grayish-white lower surface with light brown long hairs, becoming smooth later. The leaf veins are 3, conspicuously prominent, arising from the base; the leaf stalk is short, with short hairs.

  The umbel inflorescence is axillary, almost without a common stalk; the pedicel of the small flower is 1.5-3mm long, hairy, cluster of numerous small flowers; the flowers are unisexual, with male and female flowers on separate plants, yellowish-green in color;

  The perianth consists of 6 pieces, nearly equal in size and broadly elliptical in shape. The male flower has 9 stamens arranged in 3 whorls, with glands at the base of the innermost whorl, and 2-celled anthers; the female flower has multiple degenerate stamens, with the ovary superior, spherical, 1-celled, and 1 ovule.

  The fruit is nearly spherical, initially green and turning black when ripe. The flowering period is from March to April, and the fruiting period is from October to November.
 


 

  【Medicinal Uses】

  Uyao flower has the effects of dispelling wind and treating malaria, promoting qi circulation and diuresis. It is mainly used to treat malaria, rheumatism, edema, and abdominal distention and pain.

  "Dian Nan Ben Cao": "Relieves chest and diaphragm distention, relieves gas, promotes urination, relieves edema, and relieves abdominal pain caused by gas reversal."

  "Experience Identification Method of Chinese Medicinal Herbs": "Used to treat malaria."

  "Selected Yunnan Medicinal Herbs": "Dispels wind and activates blood circulation, reduces swelling, and lowers blood pressure. Used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, lower back and leg pain." Internal use: decoction, 0.5-1 liang. External use: decoction for washing.

  For the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and lower back and leg pain, 1-2 liang of Dian Changshan root is used. Decoction for oral administration.

  For the treatment of hypertension, 5-10 grams of Dian Changshan root is used. Decoction to remove residue, add rice wine to cook one chicken egg, and take internally.

  For the treatment of hemorrhoids and prolapse of the anus, boil Dian Changshan leaves in water and use for external washing.
