Nurturing Life: 6 Dietary Therapies for Kidney Health

According to traditional Chinese medicine, the kidneys are considered the foundation of the body and the place where essence is stored.  Dietary Therapy One: Thousand Gold Carp Soup

Ingredients: 1 live carp (about 500 grams), 5 grams of sand ginger.

Preparation: After cleaning the carp, stuff the sand ginger (you can also add a little ginger and green onion) into the fish belly. Do not add salt. Steam the carp and consume the cooked meat and broth. It can also be used as a side dish on a daily basis.

Effect: Invigorates the spleen and reduces swelling. It can be used for nephrotic syndrome with low proteinemia caused by spleen deficiency.

 Dietary Therapy Two: Steamed Black Bean Chicken

Ingredients: 1 black-bone silky fowl (about 1500 grams), 300 grams of red beans, 1 tablespoon of yellow wine.

Preparation: After slaughtering and removing the feathers, gut and clean the chicken, then cut it into small pieces. Wash the red beans and place them in a large porcelain bowl. Layer half of the chicken pieces, then half of the red beans, and repeat. Place the chicken liver on top and pour yellow wine over it. If you prefer sweet food, you can sprinkle a little salt on top of the chicken and add some sugar. Steam over high heat for 3 hours.

Effect: Nourishes yin and blood, promotes diuresis, and reduces swelling. It has therapeutic effects on anemia, irregular menstruation, kidney edema, malnutrition edema, and chronic prostatitis.

 Dietary Therapy Three: Steamed Red Bean and Mulberry Bark Soup

Ingredients: 60 grams of red beans, 15 grams of mulberry bark.

Preparation: Boil the red beans and mulberry bark in water, remove the mulberry bark, and drink the soup and eat the beans.

Effect: Suitable for patients with slight edema on the surface of chronic nephritis and a small amount of pus cells in urine tests as an adjunctive treatment.

 Dietary Therapy Four: Watermelon and Green Tea

Ingredients: 10 grams of watermelon rind, green tea as needed.

Preparation: Brew green tea with freshly boiled water and drink.

Effect: Clears heat, detoxifies, promotes diuresis, and reduces swelling. It is used for acute nephritis or chronic nephritis with edema accompanied by upper respiratory tract infections, sore throat, redness, and fever.

 Dietary Therapy Five: Fresh Imperata Root Soup

Ingredients: 60 grams of fresh imperata root (30 grams when dried).

Preparation: Boil the soup and take it frequently.

Effect: Imperata root is the best diuretic. It is suitable for patients with edema and hematuria. It can be used for acute nephritis with wind-heat obstructing the lungs, damp-heat stagnation, heat-toxin attacking the muscles, burning yin and blood type, and chronic nephritis with spleen and kidney yang deficiency and excessive water dampness.

Ingredients: 60 grams of chameleon plant, 60 grams of plantain.

Preparation: Boil the chameleon plant and plantain in water and drink the soup.

Effect: Suitable for patients with obvious edema and yellow greasy tongue coating caused by nephritis.
