【Formula for clearing heat and detoxifying with Guangmutong】

Guangmutong can clear heat and detoxify, and it can also treat hot and painful urination. It can be taken with Plantago asiatica. If it is used to treat edema, it can be used together with Guangmutong, Polyporus umbellatus, and Morus alba bark.

For the treatment of oral ulcers, it can be used in combination with Rehmannia glutinosa, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, and bamboo leaves.

【Efficacy of Guangmutong】

Taste and properties according to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia: "Bitter, cold."

Actions of Guangmutong:

Clears heart fire, promotes urination, regulates menstruation and promotes lactation. Used for oral ulcers, irritability with red urine, edema, hot and painful urination, abnormal vaginal discharge, amenorrhea with decreased lactation, and damp-heat painful obstruction.

According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia: "Purges heat, reduces fire. Treats oral ulcers, and also relieves difficult urination."

【Precautions for using Guangmutong】

Guangmutong should not be used by patients with kidney disease, pregnant women, and newborns. It is generally not suitable for children and the elderly. This product should not be used for a long time, and kidney function should be regularly checked.

Guangmutong is a commonly used Chinese medicine with the function of clearing heat and dampness. It used to be the main ingredient in the widely used Chinese patent medicine Longdan Xiegan Wan.

However, Guangmutong contains aristolochic acid, which is highly toxic to the kidneys and can damage renal tubular function, leading to renal failure. Because of the close association between the three, even though the names of the events may differ, they refer to almost the same thing.

The aristolochic acid contained in Guangmutong is a toxic component. If Guangmutong is used in excessive amounts, it can cause acute renal failure, and even death.

【Clinical applications of Guangmutong】

1. Mutong San (Principles of Diagnosis and Treatment) is used to treat athlete's foot, edema caused by nephritis, etc.: 4.5g of Mutong, 9g of Perilla frutescens, 6g each of Morus alba bark and Poria cocos, and 9g each of Poria cocos and Areca catechu.

Grind into powder, add ginger and scallion, decoct with water and take orally. Mutong in this formula clears heat and promotes diuresis, and it is an assistant herb.

2. Wanquan Mutong San (Introduction to Medicine) is used to treat bladder heat and difficult and yellow urine: 30g each of Mutong, Talcum, Poria cocos, and Plantago asiatica leaves, and 15g of Equisetum arvense.

Decoct with water, divide into two doses and take orally. Mutong in this formula clears heat and promotes diuresis, and it is a monarch herb.

3. Mutong San (Medical Compendium) is used to treat edema of limbs during pregnancy, or edema all over the body and face, known as "fetal edema": 2.4g each of Mutong and Smilax china, 2.1g each of Lindera aggregate, Areca catechu, Perilla frutescens, Citrus aurantium, Atractylodes macrocephala, and Poria cocos.

Add ginger, decoct with water, divide into two doses and take orally. Mutong in this formula clears heat and promotes diuresis, and it is a monarch herb.
