Bamboo Joint Grass: A Medicinal Herb with Powerful Healing Properties

January 17, 2024

Bamboo Joint Grass, as a type of Chinese medicinal herb, has the functions of clearing heat and detoxifying, diuresis and reducing swelling, and stopping bleeding. It is used for treating ulcers, abscesses, sore throat, dysentery, leukorrhea, difficult urination, and external bleeding. Let's take a look at the Bamboo Joint Grass pictures and its morphological characteristics.

【Morphological Characteristics of Bamboo Joint Grass】

Bamboo Joint Grass is an annual spreading herbaceous plant. The stem is creeping and can reach over 1 meter in length, with multiple branches. Some branches have additional branching, and there may or may not be a row of short, stiff hairs on the nodes.

The leaves are lanceolate or elongate-oval in the lower part of the branches, measuring 3-12 cm in length and 0.8-3 cm in width. The apex is usually gradually pointed, occasionally obtuse, and the leaves are either hairless or covered with stiff hairs.

The leaf sheath often has small red spots, with stiff hairs only along the mouth and one side, or covered with stiff hairs. The scorpioid umbel inflorescence usually arises singly in the leaf axil of the upper part of the branches, sometimes appearing pseudo-terminal, with generally only one inflorescence per branch.

The involucre consists of bracts with a stalk of 2-4 cm in length, folded and expanded to an ovate-lanceolate shape, with a gradually pointed or short-pointed apex and a heart-shaped or rounded base. The outer surface is either hairless or covered with short, stiff hairs.

The inflorescence branches dichotomously from the base; one branch has an inflorescence stalk of 1.5-2 cm in length, perpendicular to the involucre, forming a straight line with the stalk of the involucre, with 1-4 flowers extending far beyond the bracts, but all are sterile.

The other branch has a much shorter stalk, forming a right angle with the involucre, in the same direction as the involucre, with 3-5 fertile flowers hidden inside the bracts; the bracts are very small, almost invisible.
