Gualou Xing is not the traditional Chinese medicine Gualou. They are different plants from different plant families, with different medicinal and toxic properties. It is a modern invention.

Gualou Xing has been found to be unqualified, and relevant government departments have issued regulations prohibiting its use.

How to identify Gualou Xing

(1) Gualou Xing is a very hard plant with small holes all around it. Most importantly, it has no odor but tastes extremely bitter.

(2) Gualou Xing is used in the treatment of dysmenorrhea in women. After taking Gualou Xing, the symptoms of dysmenorrhea can be alleviated.

(3) Odor: Gualou Xing has no odor.

Symptoms of Gualou Xing poisoning

Gualou Xing contains aristolochic acid, a toxic component. Excessive intake of Gualou Xing can cause acute renal failure and even death.

Symptoms of poisoning include discomfort in the upper abdomen, followed by vomiting, headaches, chest tightness, abdominal pain and bloating, diarrhea, facial swelling, frequent urination, urgency, gradual onset of generalized edema, and confusion.
