Medicinal Diet for Hypertension: A Traditional Chinese Approach to Managing High Blood Pressure

Hypertension belongs to the category of "dizziness", "headache", and "liver yang hyperactivity" in traditional Chinese medicine, mostly caused by liver fire inflammation, liver and kidney yin deficiency, and yin deficiency and yang hyperactivity. Medicinal diet can be used as an adjuvant therapy for hypertension, as well as for prevention, rehabilitation, and health maintenance of the disease.


I. Liver fire inflammation

Symptoms:

Headache, dizziness, red face, palpitations, shortness of breath, irritability, anger, bitter taste and dry throat, tinnitus, deafness, restlessness, insomnia, constipation, yellow urine, aggravated by anger or irritation. Red tongue with yellow moss, wiry and rapid pulse.

Medicinal diet:

1. Seaweed and Cassia Seed Soup

100g seaweed, 30g cassia seeds. Wash the seaweed and cassia seeds, boil them together to make soup. Eat the seaweed and drink the soup once a day, for 4-5 days. Alternatively, use 30g seaweed, 100g winter melon, 10g barley, and an appropriate amount of sugar. Cook them together to make a soup, and drink it once a day for 4-5 days.

2. Celery Porridge

60g celery (with roots), 60g glutinous rice. Wash the celery and cut it into small pieces. Cook it together with glutinous rice to make porridge. Eat the porridge in the morning and evening, continuously for 7-8 days.

3. Chamomile Porridge

15-30g fresh chamomile sprouts or young shoots, 60g glutinous rice, rock sugar. Wash the chamomile sprouts or young shoots and cut them into small pieces. Cook them together with glutinous rice and rock sugar to make porridge. Eat the porridge for breakfast and dinner, once a day, for 7-8 days.

4. Water Chestnut and Seaweed Soup

10 fresh water chestnuts, 15g seaweed, 15g corn silk. Boil the three ingredients together to make a soup. Drink it twice a day. Alternatively, use 30g fresh water chestnuts, 30g dried jellyfish (rinsed to remove salt), cook them together to make a soup, and drink it twice a day.

5. Seaweed and Mung Bean Drink

60g seaweed, 60g mung beans. Cook them until soft, then add a little red sugar for flavoring. Drink one dose a day, continuously for 5-6 days.

6. Fresh Celery Juice

500g fresh celery, wash with cold water, mash and extract juice. Mix with 50ml honey and drink one dose divided into 3 times a day. Alternatively, wash and mash 30-60g fresh celery and decoct it (do not decoct for too long) to make a tea.

7. Chrysanthemum and Locust Flower Tea

3-6g chrysanthemum, 3-6g locust flower, 3g green tea. Brew with boiling water and drink as a substitute for tea.

8. Prunella and Lean Pork Soup

20g prunella, 50g lean pork (sliced thin). Simmer the prunella and lean pork over low heat to make a soup. Take it twice a day.


II. Yin deficiency and yang hyperactivity

Symptoms:

Headache, dizziness, blurred vision, tinnitus, palpitations, restlessness, insomnia, forgetfulness, fatigue, flushed cheeks, five centers heat, decreased urine, dry stools, thin white coating on the tongue, red tongue, wiry or wiry and rapid pulse.

Medicinal diet:

1. Celery and Jujube Soup

300g fresh celery (lower stalks), 10 jujubes. Boil the celery and jujubes with water and drink the soup twice a day.

2. Celery and Bitter Gourd Soup

500g celery, 60g bitter gourd. Cook them together to make a soup and drink it once a day for several days.

3. Celery and Chrysanthemum Drink

30g celery leaves, 3g chrysanthemum, simmer or infuse in hot water, and drink as a tea.

4. Pig Gallbladder and Green Bean Powder

120g pig gallbladder juice, 60g green bean powder. Mix the pig gallbladder juice with the green bean powder, dry and grind it into powder. Take 6g each time, twice a day. Alternatively, stuff the pig gallbladder with black beans, steam them and dry them. Take 20-30g each time, twice a day, for 7-8 days.

5. Matrimony Vine and Quail Egg Soup

15g matrimony vine, 1 quail egg. Grind the matrimony vine into powder, mix it with the quail egg, and eat it before bed. Alternatively, use 30g matrimony vine, lamb's lettuce or celery 60g, cook them together to make a soup. Or use 30g matrimony vine, 1 quail egg, cook them together to make a soup, and drink it once a day for 5-6 doses.

6. Tremella Fuciformis Dessert

6g black fungus, wash and soak in water overnight, steam for 1 hour, then add an appropriate amount of rock sugar. Take it before bed.

7. Persimmon Recipe

10 persimmons, decoct in water, divide into two doses and take twice a day. Alternatively, mash green persimmons and squeeze out the juice, take one small wine cup each time, once in the morning and evening.

8. Mung Bean and Sesame Powder

500g mung beans and black sesame each, stir-fry them and grind them into powder. Take 50g each time, twice a day.


III. Liver and kidney yin deficiency

Symptoms:

Dizziness, headache, blurred vision, dry mouth, dry eyes, insomnia, hot hands and feet, weak waist and knees, fatigue, forgetfulness, red tongue, little coating, thin or thin and rapid pulse.

Medicinal diet:

1. Sea Cucumber and Rock Sugar Drink

Take an appropriate amount of sea cucumber and rock sugar, cook them together to make a drink. Drink it on an empty stomach in the morning, and it can be consumed regularly.

2. Pueraria Root Porridge

Fresh pueraria root, an appropriate amount, 60g glutinous rice, 20g sand ginseng, 20g dwarf lilyturf root. Wash the pueraria root and cut it into slices. After grinding the sand ginseng and dwarf lilyturf root with water, remove the starch and dry it in the sun. Use 30g each of pueraria root, sand ginseng, and dwarf lilyturf root with 60g glutinous rice to cook porridge. Take it once a day, regularly.

3. Polygonum Multiflorum and Jujube Porridge

60g Polygonum multiflorum, 3 jujubes, 100g glutinous rice. Boil the Polygonum multiflorum to extract the concentrated juice, remove the residue, add the glutinous rice and jujubes, and cook them together with an appropriate amount of ice sugar to make porridge. Take it in the morning and evening.

4. Twin Ear Soup

9-12g silver ear fungus, black fungus, soak in warm water, wash, put them in a bowl with water and rock sugar. Steam for 1 hour, then eat the silver ear fungus, black fungus, and drink the soup. Take it 1-2 times a day. It is especially suitable for hypertension, arteriosclerosis, or retinal bleeding.

5. Tofu Residue and Shrimp

Take an appropriate amount of tofu residue and shrimp, stir-fry them without adding salt. Eat as a dish.

6. Bamboo Shoot Juice

Take an appropriate amount of fresh bamboo shoots, stew and drink. Use it regularly.

7. Hawthorn and Cassia Seed Soup

15-30g chrysanthemum, hawthorn, and cassia seed (crushed), brew with water, or infuse with boiling water as a tea. Reduce the amount of cassia seed for those with loose stools.

8. Duck Meat and Chrysanthemum Soup

250g duck meat, 12g chrysanthemum, 1 lotus leaf, 200g celery, an appropriate amount of sugar. Wash the chrysanthemum, lotus leaf, and celery, boil them to make a juice, remove the residue, then add the duck meat and white sugar to stew and eat. Take it once a day, continuously for 7 days.


IV. Phlegm-dampness accumulation

Symptoms:

Dizziness, headache, heaviness in the head, chest tightness, palpitations, decreased appetite, vomiting phlegm and saliva, fatigue, limb edema, white greasy coating on the tongue, slippery pulse.

Medicinal diet:

1. Carrot Porridge

Fresh carrots, an appropriate amount, 60g glutinous rice. Wash the carrots and cut them into pieces. Cook them together with glutinous rice to make porridge. Eat it once a day, regularly.

2. Black Fungus and Persimmon Drink

6g black fungus, 30g persimmon, sugar to taste. Cook the black fungus and persimmon until soft, then finely adjust the taste. Alternatively, soak 6g black fungus in water overnight, steam for 1 hour, then add sugar to taste. Take it before bed. Alternatively, take 3g white fungus, soak it in water overnight, put it in a bowl with sugar, and steam it over water for 1 hour. Take it before bed, regardless of the duration of treatment.

3. Corn Silk and Rock Sugar Drink

150g corn silk, an appropriate amount of rock sugar. Boil the corn silk to make tea, and add rock sugar to taste. Drink it as a substitute for tea. Alternatively, use 60g corn silk, 60g banana peel, 9g gardenia, boil and drink after cooling. Take it once a day, continuously for several days.

4. Plantago Seed Porridge

15g plantago seeds (wrapped in cloth), corn flour, an appropriate amount, 60g glutinous rice. Cook the plantago seeds to remove impurities, add glutinous rice to make porridge, and add corn flour dissolved in cold water to adjust the flavor. Cook until done and eat. Take it once a day, regularly.

5. Sunflower Recipe

Eat a handful of raw sunflower seeds every day. Alternatively, grind 6g raw sunflower seeds into powder and dissolve it in water with sugar.

6. Tofu Residue and Dried Shrimp Recipe

Take an appropriate amount of tofu residue and dried shrimp, stir-fry them without adding salt. Eat as a dish.

7. Bamboo Shoot Juice

Take an appropriate amount of fresh bamboo shoots, stew and drink. Use it regularly.

8. Pear and Tomato Recipe

1 pear, 1 tomato, peel them and cook them in a pot. Eat one dose a day, continuously for 20 days.

V. Dietary considerations

Control your diet, manage your weight, eat low-salt, low-calorie, low-fat, low-cholesterol foods. Eat more fresh vegetables and fruits rich in vitamins B and C, such as bean sprouts, melons, seaweed, kelp, black fungus, etc. Eat foods with hypotensive effects, such as garlic, celery, maranthus, tarragon, sweet potatoes, green beans, corn, carrots, chrysanthemum, watermelon, sea cucumber, seaweed, jellyfish, royal jelly, etc. Avoid eating foods that stimulate the heart and blood vessels. Avoid smoking and alcohol, and do not drink strong tea. Avoid foods that are prone to gas, such as dry beans, sweet potatoes, and potatoes.
