  【Efficacy of E Ma Huang】

  【Functions of E Ma Huang】

  ① Treats abdominal pain: Grind the seeds of E Ma Huang and take orally; or take 50 grams of the roots and decoct in water. (Guizhou Herbal Medicine)

  ② Treats women's dry blood consumption: Take one liang of E Ma Huang's roots. Take the first dose with wine and the second dose with stewed meat. (Guizhou Herbal Medicine)

  【Botanical Morphology】

  Shrub. Stems are 1-2 meters tall, with angular edges and sparsely covered with soft hairs. Leaves are pinnately compound, with elliptic-obovate leaflets. The terminal leaflet is 5.5-9 centimeters long and 3.5-5.4 centimeters wide, while the lateral leaflets are smaller. The leaflets have blunt or acute apex, with a hard tip, and a wedge-shaped or blunt base. The upper surface is almost hairless, while the lower surface is covered with closely appressed soft hairs along the veins. Leaf stalks are 1.5-4 centimeters long, and the stipules are small and lanceolate. Inflorescences are racemose, axillary or terminal, up to 16 centimeters long. Bracts are lanceolate, with hairy edges, and about 1 centimeter long. Flower stalks are about 5 millimeters long. Flowers are purple, about 10 millimeters long. Calyx is about 4.5 millimeters long, with 5 triangular teeth, sharply pointed, as long as the calyx tube. Corolla is butterfly-shaped, with rounded to elongated wing petals attached to the keel petals. There are 10 stamens and a linear ovary. The ventral and dorsal sutures are covered with silky hairs. Pods are 15-24 millimeters long, densely covered with brown appressed silky hairs, with a constricted ventral suture and rounded dentate dorsal suture. There are 4-7 joints, 3 millimeters long and 2.5 millimeters wide. Flowering period is from July to September.
