White Peony: A Medicinal and Culinary Treasure

White peony is a medicinal and edible ingredient with high medicinal value. It has the effects of nourishing blood, regulating menstruation, and relieving pain. It can treat various diseases. Recipe 1: Four Treasures Lamb Porridge

Ingredients: 5g white peony, 5g cooked Rehmannia glutinosa, 5g Chinese angelica, 5g astragalus, 150g minced lamb, 100g rice, salt to taste.

Directions: Put the four medicinal ingredients into a clay pot, add water and simmer for 2 hours, then remove the residue and keep the juice. Add minced lamb and rice to cook until the meat is tender and the porridge is thick. Season with salt and serve hot. Take it once daily.

Effects: This porridge nourishes blood and invigorates the spleen and kidneys. It is suitable for deficiency of Qi and blood, deficiency of spleen and kidneys, and is also beneficial for postpartum recovery and lactation.

Recipe 2: Dual Herb Lamb Soup

Ingredients: 15g white peony, 5g licorice, 5g Chinese senega, 250g lamb, salt to taste.

Directions: First, put licorice, white peony, and Chinese senega in a cheesecloth bag. Wash and cut lamb into pieces. Put the lamb and the cheesecloth bag into a clay pot, add water, and simmer until the meat is tender and the soup is fragrant. Discard the cheesecloth bag, add salt to taste. Serve hot and consume the soup and meat in multiple servings. Take it once daily.

Effects: This recipe has the effects of nourishing essence and blood, relieving pain and spasms. It is effective in treating postpartum abdominal pain, lumbago, limb coldness, palpitations, and insomnia caused by deficiency of essence and blood. It can also promote milk secretion.


Recipe 3: White Peony Stir-fried Beef Tripe with Chinese Yam

Ingredients: 10g white peony, 50g Chinese yam, 250g beef tripe, green onion, ginger slices, salt, soy sauce, sugar, water starch to taste.

Directions: Wash the white peony, cut the Chinese yam into small cubes and blanch in boiling water, cut the beef tripe into strips and steam until tender. Stir-fry green onion and ginger in a wok, add beef tripe, Chinese yam, and white peony, then add salt, sugar, and soy sauce, mix well. Add water starch to thicken the sauce. Serve as a side dish and consume once every other day.

Recipe 4: White Peony Stewed Squab

Ingredients: 10g white peony, 10g wolfberry, 300g squab, 10g ginger, 1000g water, 5g salt, 3g chicken essence, 1g sugar, 1g pepper.

Directions: Blanch the squab in boiling water, wash the white peony, slice the ginger. Heat a pot, add water, ginger slices, squab, white peony, wolfberry, bring to a boil and simmer on low heat for 40 minutes. Season to taste.

Effects: Stewed squab with white peony can treat malnutrition. In addition, white peony can regulate menstruation, relieve abdominal pain, and improve the complexion due to its blood-nourishing properties. It can treat pale complexion, facial spots, and dullness.


Recipe 5: White Peony and Chinese Angelica Honey Drink

Ingredients: 20g white peony, 5g Chinese angelica, 5g prepared Polygonum multiflorum, 20g honey.

Directions: Put white peony, Chinese angelica, and prepared Polygonum multiflorum into a pot, add water, simmer for 30 minutes, remove the residue and keep the liquid. When the liquid is lukewarm, add honey and mix well.

Effects: Nourishes blood and Qi, nourishes essence and promotes hair growth.

Recipe 6: White Peony Blood-nourishing and Pain-relieving Porridge

Ingredients: 15g white peony, 15g astragalus, 15g Chinese angelica, 10g cattail pollen, 100g japonica rice, red sugar to taste.

Directions: Decoction the astragalus, Chinese angelica, white peony, and cattail pollen for 15 minutes, remove the residue and keep the liquid. Add the liquid to the japonica rice and cook porridge, add red sugar when the porridge is cooked. Take it warm in the morning and evening for 7 days before menstruation. It nourishes Qi and blood, invigorates the spleen and stomach, and relieves pain. It is mainly used for the treatment of dysmenorrhea in women.

Effects: Astragalus and Chinese angelica can tonify Qi and nourish blood, white peony, japonica rice, and red sugar can sour, sweet, and astringe Yin, relieve urgency and pain, and cattail pollen can promote blood circulation, disperse blood stasis, and relieve pain. It can be used as an auxiliary food therapy during menstruation. Sweet potato is rich in fiber, potassium, iron, and vitamin B6. It not only prevents aging and arteriosclerosis but also effectively prevents tumors.

Note: Do not eat with Chenopodium quinoa. Avoid consumption for those with yang deficiency, cold and dampness in the middle Jiao. Use with caution for those with abdominal pain and diarrhea.
