Dabanzhai Pill: Traditional Chinese Medicine for Cough Relief and Phlegm Elimination

Dabanzhai Pill, the name of a traditional Chinese medicine formula, is derived from Volume 63 of the "Shengji Zonglu". It is used for eliminating phlegm and promoting smooth breathing. It is mainly used to treat coughing.
 


 

[Composition of the Formula] 4 liang of Banxia (washed 7 times with water, remove the sliminess, bake and dry, grind into powder), 3 liang of fresh ginger (finely grated), 3 liang of honey, 2 liang of Qingzhou jujube (boil and remove the flesh, peel and pit, put in a silver stone container with the ginger and honey, and cook together with the Banxia powder until it becomes thick), half liang of muxiang, half liang of chenxiang, half liang of Qingju peel (soak in water and remove the white part, bake), half liang of white atractylodes, half liang of Chenju peel (soak in water and remove the white part, bake), half liang of dried ginger (fried), half liang of Fuzi (fried and cracked, remove the skin and umbilicus), half liang of rou dou kou (remove the shell), and half liang of hong dou kou.

[Preparation of the Formula] Grind the above 13 ingredients into powder, except for the first 4 ingredients. Mix the Banxia paste with the powder and shape it into pills, each about the size of a wutong seed.

[Functions and Indications] Dabanzhai Pill is mainly used for treating phlegm stagnation, discomfort in the diaphragm area, coughing, and wheezing.

[Dosage and Administration] Take 10 pills each time, and swallow them on an empty stomach with dried ginger and jujube decoction. Increase the dosage to 15 pills if necessary.

[Introduction to Medicinal Herbs]

Banxia: It can dry dampness, transform phlegm, descend counterflow, and relieve vomiting. It is used to treat damp phlegm cold drinks, vomiting, regurgitation, cough with excessive phlegm, fullness and distention in the chest and diaphragm, phlegm-induced headache, dizziness, and insomnia. It can also be used externally to treat abscesses and swelling. It is used for cough with excessive phlegm, phlegm-induced dizziness and palpitations, phlegm-induced vertigo, vomiting and regurgitation, chest and epigastric distention and fullness, and plum pit qi syndrome. It can be used externally to treat abscesses, swelling, and phlegm nodules. Banxia and ginger are often used together to descend counterflow and relieve vomiting.

Fresh ginger: In hot seasons, it has the functions of promoting excitement, sweating, cooling, and refreshing. It can relieve fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite, insomnia, abdominal distention, and abdominal pain. Ginger can also invigorate the stomach and increase appetite. In hot summer weather, saliva and ginger can also relieve or alleviate stomach diseases.

Muxiang: It promotes the flow of qi, relieves pain, invigorates the spleen, and aids digestion. It can be used for epigastric and abdominal pain and distention caused by stagnation of qi in the spleen and stomach, and for pain in the sides caused by liver and gallbladder qi stagnation. It invigorates the spleen and aids digestion. It can treat abdominal pain, diarrhea, and tenesmus.

White atractylodes: It has the effects of invigorating the spleen and replenishing qi, drying dampness and diuresis, stopping sweating, and stabilizing the fetus. It is used for spleen deficiency with reduced food intake, abdominal distention and diarrhea, phlegm-induced dizziness and palpitations, edema, spontaneous sweating, and restless fetal movement. It can also remove dampness and strengthen dryness, invigorate the middle, warm the middle, remove dampness from the spleen and stomach, eliminate gastric heat, strengthen the spleen and stomach, improve appetite, relieve thirst, and stabilize the fetus.

Fuzi: It can revive yang, replenish fire, assist yang, dispel cold and dampness. It is used for excessive yin and insufficient yang, loss of yang due to excessive sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, and counterflow, cold pain in the heart and abdomen, cold diarrhea due to spleen leakage, edema, slow convulsions in children, wind-cold-damp bi syndrome, sprains and spasms, impotence, cold uterus, ulcers with discharge, and all diseases related to deep cold and chronic coldness.

[Composition of the Formula] 6 liang of Banxia, 1 liang of Sangbaipi, 1 liang of raw licorice, 6 liang of Zaojiao (pounded into powder), 6 liang of fresh ginger (shredded), 2 liang of Qingpi, 2 liang of Binglang, 2 liang of muxiang, and 2 liang of Yuliren (soaked in water, peeled, and ground separately).

[Preparation of the Formula] The first 5 ingredients are boiled in 5 liters of water until the liquid is reduced to a concentrated solution. The Banxia is removed and baked until dry, and then ground into powder. The last 4 ingredients are mixed with the Banxia powder. The natural juice of the ginger is used to make a white paste, which is then shaped into pills, each about the size of a wutong seed.

[Dosage and Administration] Qingpi, Binglang, and muxiang are originally not included in the formula, but they are added according to the "Pujifang".

[Composition of the Formula] Half jin of Banxia, half jin of fresh ginger.

[Preparation of the Formula] Grind the two ingredients into a paste, bake until dry, and then grind into fine powder. Use the juice of fresh ginger to make a paste, and shape it into pills, each about the size of a wutong seed.

[Functions and Indications] It treats phlegm and salivation.

[Dosage and Administration] Take 30 pills each time, and swallow them with ginger soup after meals.
