  [Plant Morphology of Bamboo Leaf Ginseng]

  Bamboo Leaf Ginseng is also known as Guangdong Bamboo Leaf Ginseng, Mountain Bamboo Flower, Yixian Xiang, Bamboo Joint Grass, Jade Bamboo Grass, White Child Grass, Bamboo Leaf Grass.

  The rhizome is horizontal and hard, with nodular shape; the roots are thick and fleshy. The stem is 50-150cm tall, with a diameter of about 1cm, and has more forked branches in the upper part.

  The leaves are papery, lanceolate to narrowly elliptic-lanceolate, 5-12cm long and 1-5cm wide, gradually tapering to a long point at the apex, with a nearly circular base, and with obvious 3-7 veins. There are papillary projections on the veins and edges on the lower side, and the petioles are short.

  The umbel inflorescence has 3-10 flowers, borne on short branches opposite to the upper leaves; the pedicels are long (1-)2-4cm, slightly rough; the flowers are purple; the perianth segments are oblique and lanceolate, 1.5-2.8cm long and 4-5mm wide, with a pointed apex and papillary projections on the edges, and a distance of 2-3mm at the base; the stamens are hidden inside, with anthers 3-4mm long and filaments 8-11mm long; the ovary is about 3mm long, and the style together with the stigma is 3-4 times the length of the ovary.

  The berry is 8-10mm in diameter, with 2-3(-5) seeds. The seeds are dark brown and about 5mm in diameter. The flowering period is from May to July, and the fruiting period is from August to October.

  [Properties and Channels]: Bamboo Leaf Ginseng has a bitter and pungent taste, and a cooling property. It belongs to the Liver and Kidney meridians.

  [Dosage and Administration]: Internal use: decoct 9-15g of Bamboo Leaf Ginseng; or grind into powder; or soak in alcohol. External use: apply an appropriate amount, or make a paste from the roots and apply.

  [Effects of Bamboo Leaf Ginseng]

  Bamboo Leaf Ginseng has the effects of dispelling wind and dampness, invigorating the tendons and promoting blood circulation, clearing heat and phlegm, and relieving cough. It is mainly used for rheumatic arthralgia, joint and lower back pain, bruises, fractures, debility, bone steaming and heat, hemoptysis due to pulmonary tuberculosis, cough due to lung heat, and burns.

  1. "Jiangxi Herbal Medicine": "Dispels wind, dissipates heat, invigorates the tendons and promotes blood circulation."

  2. "Shaanxi Traditional Chinese Medicine": "Nourishes yin, supplements deficiency, dispels wind and dampness, invigorates collaterals, and relieves pain. It treats debility, bone steaming and heat, pulmonary tuberculosis, palpitations, shortness of breath, and rheumatic pain in the lower back and legs. It is also used for sciatica."

  [Applications of Bamboo Leaf Ginseng]

  1. To treat paralysis of the hands and feet: Take 60g of Mountain Bamboo Flower roots and 1 egg. Stew them in water and consume the soup with the egg.

  2. To treat rheumatic pain: Take 18g of Mountain Bamboo Flower roots, 15g of Red Child Roots, 9g each of Radix Rubiae, Caulis Spatholobi, and Radix Et Rhizoma Rhei. Soak them in 500ml of white wine for 7 days, and take 15-60ml each time, once in the morning and evening.

  3. To treat lower back pain: Take an appropriate amount of Mountain Bamboo Flower roots. Grind them into powder and take 6g each time, mixed with water or wine, once in the morning and evening. (The first three formulas are from "Jiangxi Herbal Medicine")

  4. To treat debility and bone steaming and heat: Take 60g of Bamboo Leaf Ginseng, 30g each of Taibai Ginseng, Rhizoma Polygonati, and Herba Asari. Stew them with pork for consumption. ("Shaanxi Traditional Chinese Medicine")
