The Healing Power of Blood-Filled Grass: Treating Infantile Paralysis and Injuries

January 10, 2024

Blood-filled grass, a traditional Chinese medicine, can be used to treat infantile paralysis and injuries from falls. It also has the effect of relaxing muscles and promoting blood circulation. It grows in the wild, such as under the trees, along the ditches, in thickets, on slopes of valleys, and in wetlands.

【Morphological Characteristics of Blood-filled Grass】

The stem of blood-filled grass is cylindrical, with a diameter of 0.3-1.5 cm. The surface is gray-green to green-brown, hard and brittle in texture. The stem has multiple longitudinal ridges, and the ridges are covered with short yellow-brown to rusty short hairs. The stem cross-section has a hard outer layer and a wide, white, spongy medulla with a slightly glossy appearance. There are scattered brown-red dots, more on the outer side of the medulla.

The odd-pinnate compound leaves are opposite, with short petioles and green-brown to dark green leaflets. The leaflets are wrinkled and broken, but when fully extended, they are lanceolate in shape, 5-15 cm long and 2-4 cm wide, with serrated edges.

Flowers are occasionally seen, with small, cone-shaped inflorescences that are top-borne. The flowers are small, light yellow or white. The plant has a slightly fragrant smell and a mild, slightly astringent taste. The color of the stem surface, the longitudinal ridges of the stem, the presence of hairs, the wide medulla, and the scattered brown-red dots are the most characteristic identification features.

【Application of Compound Blood-filled Grass】

For the treatment of acute and chronic nephritis: Prepare 50 grams of blood-filled grass, 30 grams of Jiubinghua root, and 40 grams each of Shanpi bark and Shijiao grass. Decoct and take orally. This formula has excellent therapeutic effects on acute and chronic nephritis.

For the treatment of rheumatic pain and rubella: Use an appropriate amount of blood-filled grass to decoct and wash the affected area externally. This formula can be used to treat patients with rheumatic pain and rubella.

For the treatment of infantile paralysis and injuries from falls: First, use plum blossom needles to puncture the affected area, and then grind an appropriate amount of fresh blood-filled grass stems and leaves, stir-fry with alcohol, and use it externally. This can effectively treat infantile paralysis and injuries from falls.
