What is Daweiyao?

Daweiyao, also known as Dogtail Grass or Whole Insect Herb, is an annual herbaceous plant that grows to a height of 15-60cm. The root is cylindrical and turns yellow-brown when dry. The stem is erect, stout, and branched, with rough appressed hairs.

The leaves are alternate, rarely almost opposite; petioles are 2-5cm long; leaf blades are ovate or elliptic, 4-10cm long and 2-4cm wide, with short or gradually pointed tips, and rounded or truncate bases that extend down to the petioles;

The margins are slightly serrated or slightly wavy, and both sides have sparse short rough hairs. The scorpion-like umbel inflorescence is 5-20cm long, slender, curved, solitary, unbranched, terminal or opposite the leaves, without bracts;

The flowers are small and densely arranged in two rows on one side of the inflorescence axis; the calyx is deeply divided into 5 lanceolate lobes with rough appressed hairs; the corolla is light blue or blue-purple, rarely white, shallowly cup-shaped, 3-5mm long, with 5 shallow lobes at the apex;

The lobes are nearly circular, expanded, the throat is smooth, and there are no appendages; there are 5 stamens, hidden inside, borne at the base of the corolla tube; the ovary is small, with a very short style and stigma, and the stigma is broad-conical with a flat tip.

The fruit is ovoid, 4-5mm long, with longitudinal ribs, deeply divided into 2 lobes, each lobe further divided into 2 single-seeded carpels. The flowering period is from April to July, and the fruiting period is from August to October.

Clinical Application of Daweiyao

Treatment of boils and carbuncles

Take 60g of dried Daweiyao, chop it, and add 1000ml of water. Simmer until it reduces to 500ml. Take 20ml each time, 3 times a day after meals. Adjust the dosage for children.

Out of 213 cases treated, 37 were cured within 1-3 days, 96 within 4-5 days, 52 within 6-10 days, and 28 took more than 10 days to recover.

Preliminary observations show that it is effective in the early stage, suppurative stage, and tissue necrosis stage of boils and carbuncles. It works better when used in the early stages.
