January 6, 2024

Gansui is a traditional Chinese medicine that can be used to relieve constipation and reduce swelling. It is mainly produced in Gansu and Luoyang. The root of Gansui has multiple medicinal effects. Let's learn about the benefits and functions of Gansui!

【Benefits and Functions of Gansui】

1. Eliminates ascites

Gansui can treat urinary retention and abdominal edema. Take 5 roots of Gansui and crush them with the white part of a spring onion. Mix well with 1 qian (a traditional Chinese unit of weight) of powdered Gansui. Before using, apply vinegar to the umbilicus to prevent infection and skin irritation. Then apply the medicine to the umbilicus and cover it with gauze. It usually takes 2-4 hours to urinate or have a bowel movement. This method is effective in eliminating ascites.

2. Treats palpitations and excessive phlegm

Gansui can treat palpitations and excessive phlegm. Take 10 grams of Gansui without the heart, 10 grams of peeled purple Euphorbia, and 10 grams of white mustard seeds. Grind these three medicinal ingredients into fine powder and cook them into small pills the size of a wutong seed. Dry them in the sun and take 7-10 pills with diluted ginger soup before going to bed.

3. Treats nasal polyps

Gansui can treat nasal polyps. Take 12 grams of fried Gansui, 12 grams of fried melon stem, 1.5 grams of pine resin, and 1.5 grams of alum. Grind these four medicinal ingredients into fine powder and mix them with sesame oil to form a large pill. Apply it to the nasal polyps. The polyps will dissolve and discharge foul-smelling fluid. Use it once a day.

【Precautions for Using Gansui】

Since Gansui has strong medicinal properties, it is not recommended to self-medicate. It is best to use it under the guidance of a doctor for safety. The side effects and contraindications of Gansui mainly include the following:

1. Avoid use during pregnancy. Generally, stop using it after recovery.

2. It is recommended to use steamed Gansui or Gansui soaked in vinegar to reduce vomiting and other side effects. The acetic acid can reduce the toxic and irritating effects of Gansui. Raw Gansui has strong toxicity and laxative effects, so it is not suitable for use.

3. Traditional experience suggests avoiding the combination of Gansui with Yuanhua and Daji, but the preliminary experimental results in modern times are inconsistent. According to some reports, based on experiments on rabbits, the combination of Gansui (or Yuanhua, Daji) with Gancao did not produce significant changes in respiration, heart rate, body temperature, pupillary reflex, or gastrointestinal function. However, other experiments have shown different reactions depending on the dosage ratio of Gansui and Gancao.
