Cultivating Beautiful Gardenias: The Key Factors to Success

January 4, 2024

Speaking of gardenias, I believe everyone is familiar with them. The song "Gardenia Blossoms" allows us to appreciate the charm of gardenias. So how are these beautiful gardenias cultivated?

Soil

Gardenias prefer to grow in acidic soil with a high content of organic matter. A suitable soil mixture can be made by combining 4 parts leaf mold, 4 parts garden soil, 1 part well-rotted soybean meal, and 1 part river sand. The soil mixture should have good water permeability and air circulation. It can also be mixed with 0.5% aluminum sulfate or sulfur.

Temperature

The optimal temperature for the growth and development of gardenias is 20-25°C, and the suitable temperature for flowering is 26-28°C. Gardenias that have been cultivated for 4-5 years can tolerate short periods of temperatures as low as -3°C, but temperatures below -5°C will cause frost damage, resulting in blackened leaves and dead young branches.

Fertilization

Gardenias require regular fertilization, but they are sensitive to excessive fertilization. It is recommended to apply two doses of phosphorus and potassium-rich fertilizer before the buds appear, and stop fertilizing after flowering. Over-fertilization can lead to root burn and bud drop. During the growing season, apply well-rotted cake fertilizer or manure water every two weeks, and add 1%-2% ferrous sulfate to prevent soil alkalization.

Light

Gardenias prefer partial shade and are sensitive to direct sunlight. They require about 50% shade. If exposed to direct sunlight, the leaves will turn yellow, white, and eventually fall off. Therefore, during the summer, gardenias should be placed in semi-shady areas or places with scattered light. They should be exposed to light in the morning and evening to prevent leaf yellowing.

Watering

Gardenias require abundant water, earning them the nickname "water gardenias". In spring, due to strong winds, dry air, and scarce rainfall, they should be watered every 3 days. In the hot weather after midsummer, watering should be limited in the morning and done thoroughly in the afternoon after 2 PM. In winter, watering should be controlled to avoid excessive moisture, as it can lead to root rot and death.
