Precautions when Using Ku Tan Zi: Promoting Blood Circulation and Reducing Swelling with Caution

Chinese herb Ku Tan Zi has the effect of promoting blood circulation and reducing swelling when used externally to treat injuries. When taken internally, it can treat malnutrition in children and excessive sweating caused by weakness. What are the precautions when using Ku Tan Zi?


【Applications of Ku Tan Zi】

1. Treatment of malnutrition in children: Take 5 parts of dried Ku Tan Zi fruit. Steam with chicken liver and consume or grind into water and drink.

2. Treatment of hand and foot pain: Take 2 liang of Ku Tan Zi. Boil in water and consume.

3. Treatment of joint pain: Take 2 liang of fresh Ku Tan Zi, 2 liang of fresh Maple Lotus Pear, 1 liang each of Mountain Pepper, Star Anise, Gua Fu Mu, Wu Jia Pi, and Shi Song, 5 qian of Ox Knee, 2 qian of Tian Qi, and 1 pig's foot as an auxiliary ingredient. Stew in water and consume in two separate doses.

4. Treatment of excessive sweating caused by weakness: Take 3 liang of fresh Ku Tan Zi. Boil in water and mix with 2 chicken eggs to consume.


【Precautions when using Ku Tan Zi】

Due to the strong toxicity of Ku Tan Zi, it is commonly used externally and should be used with caution when taken orally.

Symptoms of poisoning: Vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, dry mucous membranes, rapid breathing, confusion, initial stimulation of the nervous system followed by paralysis.

Rescue methods: Gastric lavage can be considered in the early stage, along with the administration of lubricants, and fluid supplementation for symptomatic treatment.

However, in Yunnan Simao, 2-3 qian of the mashed root of this herb was used to make juice for oral consumption to treat acute gastroenteritis, with satisfactory results. If conditions permit, it can be tried under strict observation.
