The Harmful Effects of Smoking and Drinking on Hypertensive Patients

January 1, 2024

Hypertensive patients struggle with their blood pressure every day. In addition to paying extra attention to their diet, they also need to correct their lifestyle habits, especially patients who smoke and drink alcohol. It is well known that smoking and drinking have great harm to the human body.

Experimental studies have shown that one cigarette containing nicotine can kill one small white mouse. Long-term smoking can stimulate blood vessel constriction, leading to arteriosclerosis and high blood pressure. It can also shorten the lifespan of patients with heart disease. Therefore, quitting smoking is helpful in lowering blood pressure, especially in reducing the occurrence of coronary heart disease and stroke. In addition, smoking can also decrease the effective concentration of various drugs (such as digoxin and chlorpromazine) in the blood and reduce their duration of action, thereby affecting the efficacy of the drugs.

There are many types of alcohol, including rice wine, fruit wine, and white wine. Generally, low-alcohol drinks have certain nutritional value and can provide heat to the body, promote blood circulation, so moderate drinking is beneficial. However, excessive drinking, especially on an empty stomach, can lead to alcohol poisoning. According to literature reports, a study observed over 500 individuals with drinking habits and found that heavy drinkers had increased blood pressure. Generally speaking, a daily alcohol intake of less than 30 grams has little impact on the body, but once it exceeds this limit, it often leads to increased blood pressure. Therefore, patients with hypertension should strictly avoid heavy drinking, and even beer should be limited to less than half a liter per day.

The harm caused by smoking and drinking together is greater than the harm caused by smoking or excessive drinking alone. This is because tobacco and alcohol have a synergistic effect, and alcohol is a good solvent for harmful substances in tobacco. When smoking and drinking at the same time, the harmful substances in tobacco can quickly dissolve in alcohol. Alcohol can dilate blood vessels, promote blood circulation, and cause harmful substances to quickly circulate to various parts of the body, easily leading to sudden blood vessel constriction, increased blood pressure, and in severe cases, it can induce cerebrovascular accidents (strokes).

Smoking and drinking are both habits. Hypertensive patients who have developed a smoking habit must make up their minds to quit smoking. In addition, alcohol consumption should also be moderate.

Smokers often feel the harm caused by smoking, but they find it difficult to quit smoking after multiple attempts. Now I will introduce two effective methods for you to choose from.

Formula 1: Take 25 grams of Houttuynia cordata, 9 grams each of Polygala tenuifolia and Ligusticum wallichii, and 9 grams of Codonopsis pilosula. Take one dose per day, decoct twice with water, and drink as tea. This method has a good effect and no side effects have been found.

Formula 2: Take one areca nut, drill a hole in it, put it in a tobacco pouch, soak it in a small amount of hot water for two hours, then take it out and put it in a small bottle or box to carry with you. When you feel the urge to smoke, smell the areca nut with your nose. For heavy smokers, doing this 3-4 times will make them no longer want to smoke.

As long as smokers have determination and perseverance and master effective methods to quit smoking, they can definitely overcome their smoking addiction.
