【Morphological Characteristics of Da Wu Pao】
Da Wu Pao is a shrub, reaching a height of 2-3m. The stem is thick and covered with yellow hairs and short curved thorns. The leaves are alternate, with leaf stalks measuring 3-6cm long, covered with yellow soft hairs. The stipules are divided into strips, and the leaf blades are leathery, nearly circular, with a diameter of 5-16cm, and 7-9 shallow lobes similar to a palm. The lobes are often shallowly divided or have notches, with rounded or acute tips, heart-shaped bases, and irregular serrated edges. The upper surface has short hairs and dense small protuberances, while the lower surface is covered with yellow hairs. The primary veins are palmate, with 5-7 secondary veins clearly visible. The flowers are in cone-shaped or cymose inflorescences, dense with yellow hairs. The bracts are elliptic, about 1-1.5cm long, with torn edges. The sepals are ovate, often divided at the tips, and covered with yellow hairs on the outside. The petals are slightly longer than the sepals, nearly elliptic in shape, and white with claws. There are numerous stamens and pistils attached to the elevated receptacles. The aggregate fruit is spherical, reaching a diameter of 1.5cm, with numerous red berry-like small drupes. The flowering period is from April to June, and the fruiting period is from August to September.
In April, the immature fruit of Da Wu Pao is green, turns red in July, redder in August, and then purple, finally black, indicating full maturity. The plants of Da Wu Pao are larger, with more fruits, and the fruits are black when fully ripe.
The lightly red bubbles are not yet ripe, they are hard and not sweet. The dark red and purple bubbles have the best taste. The bubbles that are too black, like overly sophisticated people, are too ripe and the taste becomes bland.
