The leaves are opposite, sessile, and sheathed; leaf blades are ovate to narrowly ovate, 1-2.5cm long, 5-15mm wide, with a pointed or slightly blunt apex, rounded base, and entire margins, papery.
The flowers are solitary, axillary; flower stalks are 2-3cm long, without bracts; calyx lobes are 5, linear-lanceolate, 4-6mm long, sharp; corolla is radial, 4-6mm long, pale red, and the lobes are inverted ovate. The edges are entire or slightly serrated, with glandular marginal hairs; stamens are 5, with hairy filaments; ovary is superior, hairless, and the style is thread-like. The capsule is spherical, about 4mm in diameter. The seeds are dark brown, densely covered with wart-like protrusions. Flowering period is from March to May.
