In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Da Jiugu Niu is believed to have the effects of clearing heat, detoxification, relieving cough, and alleviating pain. It is commonly used for conditions such as cough due to lung heat, mastitis, mumps, boils, and contusions.

"Compilation of National Chinese Medicinal Herbs": "Clears heat, detoxifies, relieves pain, and stops coughing. Mainly used for cough due to lung heat, mumps, mastitis, and abscesses."

1. Treatment for cough due to lung heat: Take 5 grams of Da Jiugu Niu root (peeled), 2 grams of Xianglingcao, and 2 grams of Wacao. Grind them into a powder and take 2 grams per dose, twice a day.

2. Treatment for mastitis, mumps, boils, and abscesses: Take equal parts of Da Jiugu Niu, Chonglou, Baiji, Xiaozhan Yao, and Wuxiang Xueteng. Grind them into a powder and mix with honey or vinegar for external application.

[Infectious Nature of Mumps]

Acute bacterial mumps (suppurative mumps) is caused by bacterial infection, mainly Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus.

Common causes include reduced secretion function of the salivary glands (such as decreased resistance and oral immunological function, fasting after surgery, etc.), blockage of the salivary duct or lymphadenitis of the salivary glands, and spreading of inflammation to adjacent tissues.

Viral mumps: Common mumps viruses include mumps virus, herpes simplex virus, Coxsackie virus, and influenza A virus. Mumps virus infection is the most common cause of epidemic mumps.

[Prevention of Mumps]

1. Early isolation of patients to manage the source of infection until the swelling of the salivary glands completely subsides. Contacts generally do not require quarantine, but in collective child-care institutions, military units, etc., they should be kept under observation for 3 weeks, and suspected cases should be temporarily isolated immediately.

2. Cut off the transmission route and ensure ventilation and sun exposure of bedding.

3. Passive immunization to protect susceptible individuals: Mumps immunoglobulin has a certain effect, but its availability is limited and difficult to promote. The preventive effect of general immunoglobulins against this disease is doubtful.

Active immunization: Currently, the combined vaccine for measles, mumps, and rubella has a good immunization effect and is part of the national immunization program. The initial vaccination is recommended at 8 months and 18-24 months of age, with a subcutaneous or intramuscular injection.
