December 30, 2023

When it comes to toothache, we can't help but think of the saying: toothache is not a disease, but it can be deadly when it hurts. When the symptoms of toothache are severe, what methods can relieve the pain? Traditional Chinese medicine often uses Sedum sarmentosum to relieve toothache.

Sedum sarmentosum

  【Sedum sarmentosum for relieving toothache】

Sedum sarmentosum has a pungent, bitter, slight, and slightly toxic taste. It belongs to the liver and heart meridians.

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that Sedum sarmentosum has the effects of dispelling wind and activating collaterals, eliminating dampness and relieving pain, reducing swelling and detoxifying. It is often used for wind-cold-damp arthralgia, muscle and bone pain, fractures, hernia pain, sore throat, stomachache, abdominal pain caused by intestinal parasites, toothache, boils, carbuncles, and burns.

  1. Dry root of Sedum sarmentosum, three to five qian. Decoction and take orally; or grind into powder, five fen, and take with water. (Guangzhou Troops "Common Chinese Herbal Medicine Manual")

  2. Four liang of Sedum sarmentosum, one liang of Ledebouriella divaricata. Add 500O milliliters of 75% alcohol (soak), dip cotton in the medicinal solution and apply it to the affected area. ("Prescription Collection of New Medical Methods of Traditional Chinese Medicine")

  【Pharmacological effects of Sedum sarmentosum】

  1. The injection solution of root water extract can be used as an infiltrating anesthetic for abdominal surgery. Local anesthesia occurs 2-6 minutes after administration.

  2. A brown oily substance (N-4) was extracted from Sedum sarmentosum. It showed good analgesic effects in mouse writhing response induced by acetic acid and rabbit K+ permeation pain test. In addition, it can inhibit spontaneous activity of mice and synergize with pentobarbital sodium and chloral hydrate for hypnotic effects. A crystalline resin compound extracted from Sedum sarmentosum, at the dose of 8-10 mg/kg intraperitoneal injection, showed analgesic effects on mouse writhing response, and at the dose of 200 μg/kg intracerebroventricular injection, it significantly increased the pain threshold in rats under light and heat stimulation.

  3. Crystalline resin compound from Sedum sarmentosum, at the dose of 8-40 mg/kg intraperitoneal injection, can induce catalepsy in mice, and at the dose of 20 mg/kg intraperitoneal injection, it can induce catalepsy in rats.

  4. Crystalline resin compound from Sedum sarmentosum, at the concentration of 8-1×10-6-1×10-4g/ml, has no effect on the contractility of isolated guinea pig intestines, but can antagonize the contractility induced by acetylcholine, pilocarpine, BaCl2, and histamine.

  【Methods to relieve pain】

  First, saltwater gargle

For people with toothache, it is recommended to develop the habit of gargling with saltwater after meals in daily life. Doing so can effectively remove food residues in the oral cavity and kill bacteria. Saltwater gargle can also provide good relief for toothache.

  Second, onion

Although onions can make you cry, they can also provide good relief for toothache. When you have toothache, cut one or two slices of onion and chew on the affected tooth. The substances released by the onion juice can effectively alleviate toothache.

  Third, lemon

Lemons contain rich citric acid, which can provide good relief for pain. However, for people with sensitive gums, overly acidic foods may exacerbate toothache symptoms, so it is important to choose carefully.
