December 30, 2023

Centipede grass is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb that can clear heat and detoxify the body. It can be used to treat colds and coughs. It can also be placed in fish tanks as an aquatic plant. So how do we cultivate centipede grass in a fish tank?

Aquatic plants can perform photosynthesis, providing oxygen to the aquatic environment.

We know that fish also need to absorb oxygen for their growth. The environment inside the fish tank is enclosed, and without specific oxygen-producing equipment, the oxygen in the water will quickly be consumed, making it impossible for the fish to survive.

Centipede grass undergoes photosynthesis under the illumination of light during the day, releasing oxygen and increasing the dissolved oxygen content in the water to meet the necessary requirements for fish growth.

When cultivating aquatic plants, we need to pay attention to lighting, filtration, fertilizers, carbon dioxide, temperature, and the pH of the water. Some good aquatic plants to cultivate include water ferns and crown plants, which can grow well even without fertilizers.

Most aquatic plants prefer to grow in weakly acidic water. Acidic substrates include peat pellets, charcoal soil, and various aquatic soils. However, personally, I think it's fine to be a bit casual with the substrate, but it's important to ensure there is some space between the substrate particles to prevent the roots of the aquatic plants from lacking oxygen and rotting.

Cultivating aquatic plants is suitable for pairing with small fish such as zebra fish, peacock fish, and moonlight fish. Large fish may eat or pull the aquatic plants. As for water changes, it is best to have a nitrification filtration system so that water changes can be done every few weeks. If not, you can change the water once or twice a week, replacing 1/3 to 1/2 of the water each time.

Tap water should be left to stand for 3 to 4 days before using it in the fish tank. The temperature of the fish tank can be controlled at 26 degrees Celsius. Water wisteria has high lighting requirements and can be a bit difficult to cultivate.

【Precautions for centipede grass】

Centipede grass does not contain any toxins and has detoxifying effects. It can be consumed in moderate amounts daily. However, it is important not to consume too much. Not because consuming too much will lead to adverse symptoms, but because consuming too much would be wasteful and would not immediately produce good effects. It needs to be slowly adjusted over time.
