Ema Huang, Chinese medicine name, also known as Xifengdai, Hongzhangcao, Dahongpao, Shanmalong, Nianshencao, Weitongcao, is the whole plant of the legume plant Ema Huang, which has high medicinal value. It has the functions of promoting blood circulation, relieving pain, detoxifying, and reducing swelling. It is commonly used for abdominal pain, pediatric malnutrition, women's blood deficiency, waist sprain, trauma, urethritis, parotitis, and snake bites.
【Morphology】
Ema Huang is a small shrub, 0.5-2m tall. The branches are sparsely covered with soft hairs. The petioles of the leaves have light yellow soft hairs; the stipules are lanceolate in shape; the trifoliate leaves are terminal, with wide elliptical shape, 4.5-8.5cm long and 2.5-5cm wide, blunt at the apex, with a hard tip, wedge-shaped at the base, hairless on the upper surface, and with long yellow soft hairs on the veins on the lower surface. The lateral leaflets are small and slightly oblique. The axillary or terminal corymbose inflorescence is up to 16cm long, with numerous densely arranged flowers; the bracts are lanceolate and fall off; the calyx is bell-shaped, with lanceolate calyx teeth and long soft hairs; the corolla is pink, the banner petal is about 1cm long, without a claw, the wing petals are equal in length to the banner petal, and the keel petals are shorter; the ovary is linear, and the ventral and dorsal sutures are covered with silky hairs. The pod is 1.5-2.5cm long, densely covered with black-brown silky hairs, with 4-7 pod segments, the ventral suture is constricted, and the dorsal suture is slightly wavy. Flowering period is from July to September, and fruiting period is from September to November.
【Growing Environment】
It grows on mountain slopes or forest edges at altitudes of 600-2300m. It is distributed in Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, Taiwan, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Tibet and other places.
【Identification】
The stem branches are cylindrical, with a diameter of about 3mm, and the surface has longitudinal ridges. Trifoliate leaves are visible, with the terminal leaflet larger, 5.5-9cm long and 3.5-5cm wide, elliptical to inverted ovate in shape, blunt or acute at the apex, with a hard tip, wedge-shaped at the base, entire margin, withered green, with soft hairs on the lower surface, and brittle texture. Sometimes corymbose inflorescences or pods can be seen. The pods are 1.5-2.4cm long, with constricted ventral sutures and deeply wavy dorsal sutures, with 4-7 segments, and the surface is densely covered with brownish silky hairs. It has a slight odor and a bean-like smell.
