The Healing Power of Sangbaipi: Clearing Lungs, Relieving Asthma, and Reducing Swelling

Chinese medicine Sangbaipi is the dried root bark of the mulberry tree, a dicotyledonous plant of the mulberry family, after removing the cork. Sangbaipi has the functions of clearing the lungs, relieving asthma, promoting diuresis, and reducing swelling. It is used for lung heat with wheezing and coughing, edema with fullness and scanty urine, and facial edema.
 


 

Functions and Indications of Sangbaipi

Sangbaipi clears the lungs, relieves asthma, promotes diuresis, and reduces swelling. It is used for lung heat with wheezing and coughing, edema with fullness and scanty urine, and facial edema.

Clinical Applications of Sangbaipi

1. "Xiao Er Yao Zheng Zhi Jue" prescribes "Xie Bai San" to treat cough with hidden lung fire. Symptoms include cough, severe dyspnea, hot and steaming skin, worsened after breastfeeding, red tongue with yellow coating, and thready and rapid pulse.

Grind equal amounts of Sangbaipi and Digu Pi into powder, add a pinch of polished glutinous rice, and boil in two small bowls of water for seven minutes. Take it before meals. Sangbaipi enters the lungs with a sweet and cold nature, clears lung heat, promotes lung qi movement, and relieves wheezing and coughing. It is the principal herb in this formula.

2. "Hua Shi Zhong Cang Jing" prescribes "Wu Pi San" to treat skin edema caused by water stagnation and qi stagnation.

Symptoms include swelling in the head, face, four limbs, and abdomen, distention and fullness in the chest and abdomen, rapid and shortness of breath, difficult urination, or pregnancy-induced edema, white and greasy tongue coating, and deep and slow pulse. The formula consists of Shengjiang Pi, Sangbaipi, Chenju Pi, Dafupi, and Fuling Pi, each at 9g.

Decoct the herbs in water and take orally. This formula effectively eliminates lung qi stagnation and promotes diuresis. It serves as an assistant herb in this formula.

3. Sangbaipi can be decocted alone with honey and taken orally to treat nosebleeds.

Can Pregnant Women Take Sangbaipi?

Pregnant women should not take Sangbaipi because it has the effects of promoting blood circulation, resolving stasis, and causing fragmentation.

Women should avoid consuming blood-promoting foods and raw, cold, and stimulating foods during pregnancy.

Throughout the entire pregnancy, it is important to maintain a balanced and nutritious diet to prevent malnutrition and gestational diabetes.
