Causes, Prevention, and Treatment of Bad Breath: A Comprehensive Guide

December 28, 2023

Some people often emit a noticeable odor from their mouths, known as bad breath. People with bad breath are often bothered by it, but as long as they go to the hospital and have a thorough examination by a doctor to find out the cause, bad breath can be cured. Below is a brief introduction to the common causes of bad breath and their prevention and treatment.

1. Not rinsing or brushing teeth after meals or before bed can result in varying degrees of bad breath the next morning. This is because there are food residues in the mouth or between the teeth, which are decomposed by bacteria and produce an odor. Therefore, brushing teeth in the morning and evening, and rinsing the mouth after meals, are necessary. Children over three years old should learn to brush their teeth with the help of their parents and teachers to maintain oral hygiene. This not only prevents bad breath, but also prevents tooth decay, gingivitis, periodontal disease, and so on.

2. Oral diseases: This is one of the important causes of bad breath, such as tooth decay, periodontal disease, gingivitis, chronic pharyngitis, or infection of the wound after tooth extraction. This condition requires treatment under the guidance of a doctor. Once the disease is eliminated, the bad breath will naturally disappear.

3. The nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are connected to the oral cavity. When the nasal cavity or paranasal sinuses are inflamed, purulent secretions often flow into the oral cavity through the posterior nostrils, causing bad breath. In this case, it is necessary to seek treatment from a specialist and use antibiotics to fundamentally eliminate the cause of bad breath.

4. Stomach diseases: Chronic gastritis, low stomach acid, indigestion, and pyloric obstruction causing food retention and fermentation can also cause bad breath. Different methods should be used to treat different diseases. For example, for low stomach acid, follow the doctor's instructions to take diluted hydrochloric acid or domperidone tablets. For chronic gastritis, take Gastridin, Le De Wei, or Sanjiu Wei Tai, and for pyloric obstruction, hospitalization may be necessary. Pay attention to dietary hygiene and develop the habit of drinking slowly and swallowing food in small bites.

5. Respiratory diseases: Inflammatory diseases of the trachea, bronchi, and lungs, especially lung abscess, often result in a foul odor when exhaling. Lung abscesses are often the result of complications from pneumonia due to delayed or intermittent treatment. Prevention measures include timely and adequate medication for pneumonia until complete recovery, as well as regular physical exercise to enhance the body's resistance.

6. Diabetes: Patients with diabetes have a special odor in their mouths, similar to the smell of rotten apples. They need to take oral hypoglycemic drugs or inject insulin under the guidance of a doctor. Once the condition improves, the bad breath will also improve or disappear.

Although there are many causes of bad breath, satisfactory results can be achieved by treating them according to their specific causes.
