The Versatile Applications of Xishaicao in Traditional Chinese Medicine

The traditional Chinese medicinal herb "Xishaicao" is used for rheumatism, weakness in the tendons and bones, soreness and weakness in the waist and knees, numbness in the limbs, hemiplegia, and wind rash and damp sores. What are the applications of Xishaicao in combination with other herbs?


1. Treatment of weak legs due to Leprosy: Xishaicao (red stems collected in May, dried in the shade, and then dried in the sun after removing impurities) one jin, Danggui, Shaoyao, Shudi each one liang, Chuanwu (processed black beans) six qian, Qianghuo, Fangfeng each one liang. 2. Treatment of intestinal bleeding due to intestinal wind: Xishaicao leaves steamed with wine, ground into powder and made into honey pills. Take three qian (approximately 9 grams) with white soup. (Authentic Prescription Collection)

3. Hypertension: Xishaicao, Xiakucao, Sangjisheng each 15g, Juhua, Longdancao each 9g, decocted and taken orally.

4. Rheumatoid arthritis, lumbar and leg pain, etc.: Xishaicao, Laoguancao each 12g, Jixueteng 15g, decocted and taken orally.


5. Malaria: Xishaicao alone can be used in a dosage of 30-45g, decocted and taken orally.

6. Hepatitis with jaundice, hemiplegia, scabies, etc. can be treated in combination with other medicines.

7. Stroke: In summer, collect Xizhi branches and leaves, wash them, steam them nine times and dry them nine times, but avoid excessive dryness. Grind them into powder, add honey and make them into pills about the size of a wuzi (a type of fruit). Take 20-30 pills on an empty stomach with warm wine and rice soup. After taking the pills, you should eat 3-5 spoons of food to compress the medicine. Take continuously for several months to see results. This formula is called "Xianwan".

8. Cold diarrhea: Grind Xishaicao into powder, add vinegar and paste to make pills about the size of a wuzi. Take 30 pills with plain water. This formula is called "Huoxianwan".

Xishaicao has the effects of dispersing wind and dampness, relieving rheumatic pain, and stopping pain. When used raw, it is slightly cold and good at transforming damp heat. It is especially suitable for those with rheumatic pain and excessive heat. When used in combination with Xiwutong, it is called "Xitong Pill" in the "Collection of Health Experience".
