  When selecting Ze Xie, look for a smooth surface and a layer of stripes on the skin. After being sliced, the skin should appear gray-white with stems. When purchasing Ze Xie, check for any signs of insect damage.

  1. Diuretic and Edema-Reducing Effects (for edema and urinary difficulty): Used to treat edema and urinary difficulty caused by water retention. It is often used in combination with Fu Ling and Zhu Ling, such as in the prescription Wu Ling San;

  It can also be used to treat pregnancy-induced edema. The diuretic effect of Ze Xie is stronger than that of Fu Ling.

  2. Clearing and Draining Kidney Fire (for urinary disorders and nocturnal emissions): Used to treat hot and painful urination, dribbling, and urinary difficulty caused by damp-heat accumulation in the bladder. It is often used in combination with Mu Tong and Che Qian Zi;

  If damp-heat causes abnormal vaginal discharge, it can be combined with Long Dan Cao and Huang Bai;

  If there is insufficient kidney yin and excessive heart fire leading to nocturnal emissions, hot flushes, and night sweats, it is often used in combination with Shan Zhu Yu and Shu Di Huang, such as in the prescription Liu Wei Di Huang Wan.
