Liu Jinu: A Traditional Chinese Medicine for Healing and Promoting Wellness

Chinese medicine "Liu Jinu" is the whole plant of the Asteraceae plant Qihao. It has the effects of healing wounds and stopping bleeding, promoting blood circulation and regulating menstruation, promoting digestion and resolving food stagnation, and invigorating the spleen and improving appetite. Liu Jinu wine is mainly used for the treatment of blood stasis and amenorrhea, postpartum stasis and abdominal pain, fractures and injuries, as well as traumatic bleeding, and other conditions.

[Introduction of Liu Jinu wine]

Prescription:

Liu Jinu 10g, licorice 10g, white wine 100ml.

Preparation method:

1. Crush Liu Jinu and licorice;

2. Put them in a pot, add 200ml of water, and simmer until 100ml;

3. Add 100ml of white wine, simmer until 100ml, remove the residue and set aside.

Effect:

Promote blood circulation and regulate menstruation, disperse stasis and relieve pain. It is used for the treatment of blood stasis and amenorrhea, postpartum stasis and abdominal pain, fractures and injuries, as well as traumatic bleeding. Pregnant women should avoid drinking this wine.

[Description of Liu Jinu]

Liu Jinu is a dried whole plant with flowers of Qihao. It is 60-90cm long, usually bent, with a diameter of 2-4mm. The surface is brownish-yellow to brown, often covered with white hairs. The stem is firm and hard, with a fibrous breakage surface, yellowish-white, and loose in the center.

The leaves are opposite, usually dry and shriveled or shed, with a dark green surface and a grayish-green back, covered with white hairs, brittle and easily broken or shed.

The branches have flower spikes and are yellowish-brown. It has a fragrant smell and a mild taste. The leaves are green, the flower spikes are yellow and abundant, and there are no mold spots or impurities.

[Pharmacological effects of Liu Jinu]

1. Effects on the liver

Concentrated decoction of Yin Xingcao (also known as Liu Jinu) can significantly reduce the serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) induced by acetic acid phenol in rats; it has obvious choleretic effects on anesthetized dogs and rats.

The total alkaloids and total flavonoids of Liu Jinu can prevent the increase of ALT in rats caused by acetic acid phenol-induced liver damage, and are effective components of Liu Jinu decoction for the prevention and treatment of phenol liver damage.

2. Antibacterial effects

Yin Xingcao has bactericidal effects on Shigella dysenteriae and Salmonella typhi, and bacteriostatic effects on Shigella flexneri, Shigella boydii, Escherichia coli, and Proteus vulgaris.
