The Medicinal and Artistic Value of Yasong: A Unique Plant with Healing Properties

December 27, 2023

  Yasong is a whole herb of the Crassulaceae plant Sedum sarmentosum. It is mainly distributed in Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu, Henan, Hubei, Sichuan, and Yunnan provinces in China. It has the function of clearing heat and detoxification, and is commonly used to treat symptoms such as hot abscesses and wet sores.

  【Morphological Characteristics of Yasong】

  The aged Yasong has the same skin color as the cliff cypress, ranging from gray-black to gray-white. The Yasong that comes out of the cliff cave also has a nearly one-centimeter thick crust, and the shape is also lumpy and plate-like.

  The oiliness and delicacy of Yasong are very good. The color of the wood ranges from light yellow to golden red, and it can carve very delicate texture. In my opinion, it is not inferior to any existing root art material.

  As a root art collection, the most outstanding feature of Yasong is its beautiful and varied texture. As mentioned above, the texture of Yasong is larger, three-dimensional, and full of strength;

  Combined with its skin color and unique texture, it is quite impactful. Moreover, the shape is also diverse, just like the cliff cypress, with distinct figures and birds and animals. It is definitely a natural root art material worthy of collection.

  【Application Value of Yasong】

  Traditional Chinese medicine believes that Yasong has the function of clearing heat and detoxification, and it is used to treat hot abscesses, erysipelas, orchitis, burns, wet sores, bacterial dysentery, and amoebic dysentery.

  In addition, Yasong also has a sedative effect and can promote wound healing.

  Treatment of erysipelas in children: 15g of Yasong, 9g each of honeysuckle, forsythia, dandelion, cortex moutan, red peony, and phellodendron. Boil in water and take orally. ("Qinling and Bashan Natural Medicinal Records")

  Treatment of orchitis: appropriate amount of Yasong. Mash and apply externally. ("Qinling and Bashan Natural Medicinal Records")

  【Planting Methods of Yasong】

  Before planting Yasong, it is best to prepare the soil and sterilize it. The sterilization method can be to spray formalin and cover it with plastic sheet for five days, then uncover it and expose it to the sun for several days.

  After Yasong arrives home, do not immediately pot it. First soak it in water with a small dose of rooting agent for about an hour. Some people use sand for planting Yasong, but I do not recommend it.

  If conditions permit, you can use red soil, and if conditions are not available, I recommend a kind of powdered shale called shale. If conditions permit, it is best to choose ground planting with root protector and avoid pot planting as much as possible.

  After planting, shade and windproof Yasong, but ventilation must be ensured. If conditions permit, build a greenhouse for Yasong. Remember not to remove the leaves when Yasong arrives home. Then water it thoroughly with water mixed with rooting agent and it is done.
