Quackgrass: A Perennial Herb with Medicinal Benefits

Quackgrass is a perennial herb. The stem is slender, with sparse branching at the upper part and lying flat at the lower part, 15 to 30 centimeters tall, green or purple. The leaves are opposite, sessile, ovate or lanceolate, 5 to 20 millimeters long, 2 to 8 millimeters wide, pointed at both ends, with golden edges or shallow wavy margins. The umbel inflorescence is terminal or axillary. The flowers are white, with slender filaments like silk. The calyx has 5 lanceolate sepals, pointed at the apex, with membranous and smooth margins. The petals are 5, equal to or slightly shorter than the sepals, deeply divided to the base. There are 5 stamens and 2 to 3 styles in the ovary. The mature fruit is slightly longer than the persistent calyx and splits into 6 lobes.
 


 

The flowering period is in spring. It grows in fields, stream banks, or wet areas. It is distributed in most parts of China.

【Effects of Quackgrass】:

Hemostasis, promoting tissue regeneration, clearing the liver and improving eyesight, and resolving phlegm and relieving cough. It is an important herb for treating eye disorders. It is mainly used for red, swollen, and painful eyes, dizziness, cough with excessive phlegm, external bleeding, ulceration, slow healing wounds, excessive vaginal discharge in women, and premature ejaculation and spermatorrhea in men.

【Applications of Quackgrass】:

1. Used for excessive vaginal discharge and irregular menstruation in women, premature ejaculation and spermatorrhea in men, with astringent and consolidating properties. It can be combined with Coptis chinensis, Potentilla chinensis, and Fagopyrum dibotrys.

2. Used for external bleeding and slow healing wounds and ulcers. It can be powdered and applied to the affected area; or mixed with Rubus parvifolius, Saxifraga stolonifera, and powdered for external use; it can also be combined with Cibotium barometz, Boswellia carterii, Scorpio asiatica, and Scorpio minor for external use.

3. Used for prolapse of the anus, can be combined with Sepia bone and Salix alba.

4. Used for liver fire flaming up, red, swollen, and painful eyes, and blurry vision. It can be used alone, 15g, to make a decoction for washing the affected eyes; or combined with Lonicera japonica, Polygonum aviculare, Equisetum arvense, and Rubia cordifolia for internal and external use to wash the affected eyes.

5. Used for excessive liver yang, headache, dizziness, and blurred vision. It can be combined with Bupleurum chinense, Anemarrhena asphodeloides, and Ligustrum lucidum.

6. Used for cough with excessive phlegm and pulmonary tuberculosis. It can be used alone; or combined with Saxifraga ligulata, Bletilla striata, Oryza sativa, and Coptis chinensis.

7. Used for damp-heat jaundice, can be combined with Trifolium repens, Cynodon dactylon, etc.

【Dosage of Quackgrass】:

6 to 10 grams. External use as needed. The decoction of this herb is not very effective, it is recommended to use tincture or powder. It has natural preservative properties.
