Understanding Medication Warnings: Use with Caution, Avoid Using, and Do Not Use

December 22, 2023

When we use medication, we often find warnings in the instructions that say "use with caution," "avoid using," or "do not use." Although these three phrases differ by only one word, they have significant differences in meaning.

Use with caution: This means that the medication should be used carefully and attentively. After using the medication, one should pay close attention to observe any adverse reactions. If any occur, the medication should be stopped immediately. This is especially important for children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with heart, liver, or kidney problems. These groups should exercise extra caution due to certain physiological characteristics they possess. For example, their ability to metabolize drugs (including detoxification and elimination) is weakened, which can lead to adverse reactions.

Generally, it should not be used casually. However, using with caution does not mean it cannot be used at all. In situations where it is necessary to use medication with caution, it should be done under the guidance of a doctor.

Avoid using: This means it is advisable to avoid using the medication, or it is best not to use it. For example, some patients may experience significant side effects after taking certain medications, such as sulfonamides, which can harm the kidneys, so individuals with impaired kidney function should avoid using them. Rifaampicin (an anti-tuberculosis drug) can damage liver cells, so individuals with impaired liver function should avoid using it. However, when the condition necessitates the use of a medication that is to be avoided, alternative drugs with similar pharmacological effects but fewer adverse reactions should be sought. If the use of the medication is absolutely necessary, other drugs that can counteract or reduce its side effects should be simultaneously used to minimize the risk. When it comes to home medication use, it is best to avoid using any medication that is to be avoided.

Do not use: This means it is absolutely prohibited from being used. For medication that is not allowed, there is no room for choice. Once patients take these medications, they will experience severe adverse reactions or poisoning. For example, Chinese herbs like Badou, Qianniuguo, Shexiang, and Shuizhi should not be used by pregnant women. Patients with stomach ulcers should not use aspirin, as it can cause gastric bleeding or even perforation. Morphine has the ability to suppress the respiratory center, so it should not be used by individuals with bronchial asthma or pulmonary heart disease. When it comes to home medication use, any medication that is not allowed should never be used casually to prevent serious consequences.
