Tansy: A Threat to Ecological Balance and a Source of Medicinal Benefits

December 21, 2023

Tansy is an annual herbaceous plant that, although it looks a bit like wormwood, has very different uses and effects from wormwood. Tansy has strong vitality and causes great damage to the ecological environment!

What is Tansy?

Common tansy, also known as wormleaf, American wormwood, and bitter buttons. The plant can grow to a height of 50-150 cm, and under favorable conditions, it can grow over 2 meters, making it a tall member of the herbaceous plant family.

The lower leaves of the plant are opposite, while the upper leaves are alternate. The leaflets are finely divided, resembling the leaves of wormwood, hence the name wormleaf. It is also called American wormwood because it is an "alien" from America.

Tansy has a wide adaptability and has lived in desert areas with extremely harsh water and heat conditions for thousands of years.

As we all know, desert areas have dry climates, minimal precipitation, and intense evaporation.

They are like the "special forces" of the plant world, enduring the harshest tests and naturally adapting to various soil fertility, acidity and alkalinity, as well as different temperatures and light conditions.

Tansy Growth

Tansy has strong regenerative ability, reproductive ability, and environmental adaptability. Its stems, nodes, branches, and roots can grow roots when randomly planted, so if not completely removed, it is very easy to "spring back to life".

Its seeds can be spread by wind, water flow, and human activities, easily forming dominant populations and competing for water, nutrients, and sunlight with local plants and crops, causing the gradual decline of other plants and damage to local ecosystems and agricultural production.

Moreover, its seeds can remain viable on the ground for 30-40 years, and can grow in wastelands, roadside banks, and even hardened soil.

Tansy is a very vigorous organism, and it exists in most countries around the world, posing a great threat to human health.

Medicinal Uses of Tansy

It is said that tansy has many medicinal values. It can be used as an astringent, preservative, emetic, emollient, and antipyretic.

Early healers of Native Americans believed that this plant had medicinal value and made full use of its local and internal advantages for applications.

Traditional Chinese medicine uses tansy to relieve nausea, menstrual discomfort, and fever. Some Native American tribes use the roots of tansy plants to make tea as a laxative.

Tansy juice can be used to relieve insect bites or poison ivy rashes.

Tansy pollen is sometimes used in natural pollen therapy.
