  Identification of characteristics

  Cylindrical, 3.7-7.5 cm long, grayish-white or light brown on the surface, opaque. If the outer skin is not removed, there may be 3-4 rings and longitudinal lines, and one layer of outer skin can be peeled off, resembling fibrous. Obvious knife marks can be seen. There is a depression or protruding stem scar at the top. The texture is solid, not easily broken, and the section is not flat, resembling a woody texture. Slightly aromatic, slightly bitter taste.

  Microscopic identification

  Powder characteristics: Light brown.

  ① Numerous starch grains, single or compound. Single grains are round, helmet-shaped, or axe-shaped, a few are irregular quadrilaterals, with a diameter of 3-8-13μm. Larger starch grains occasionally have a "cross" shaped hilum, and the layers are not obvious. Compound grains are composed of 2-4 sub-grains; sub-grains are often helmet-shaped, semi-circular or triangular.

  ② Calcium oxalate cluster crystals are present in the inner layer of the cork and the thin-walled cells of the cortex, with a flower-like or pointed crystal petal, with a diameter of 8-26μm.

  ③ The vessels have reticulate patterns, with a diameter of up to 80μm, with inclined end walls and elongated pits; fragments of vessels with large pitted bordered pits can also be seen.

  ④ The wood parenchyma is in the form of blocky pieces, with cells being rectangular or elongated, and the walls slightly thickened.
