The Side Effects and Proper Usage of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

December 16, 2023

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a type of medicine that is recognized and used under the guidance of TCM theory. But does TCM have any side effects? And how should we take TCM correctly?

【Side Effects of TCM】

Side effects of TCM do exist, but they are different from the toxicity of drugs.

The side effects of TCM usually manifest as unexpected or non-therapeutic effects when used in a rational combination.

For example, using rhubarb to reduce fever can lower body temperature, but it may also cause mild diarrhea as a side effect. Similarly, using certain tonics like donkey-hide gelatin can nourish blood and restore vitality, but it may also generate dampness in the body. Rational use of TCM can minimize side effects but cannot eliminate them entirely.

The combination of drugs can counteract the side effects of individual herbs. Therefore, when herbs are used in combination, the side effects are greatly reduced.

【How to Take TCM】

1. Decoction preparation

Decoction is one of the most commonly used forms of TCM. The preparation of decoction requires specific utensils, water, heat, and cooking methods. It is recommended to use sand pots, clay pots, or enamel pots, and avoid using copper or iron pots to prevent chemical reactions that may affect the therapeutic effect.

The heat and cooking time for decoction depend on the nature of the herbs. Some herbs have different textures and require special decoction methods, such as pre-decoction, post-decoction, decoction in a separate bag, decoction in a different pot, dissolution, soaking, and decoction as a substitute for water.

2. Administration

TCM decoctions are generally taken once a day, divided into two doses, with an interval of about 4-6 hours between the two doses. TCM decoctions are usually taken warm.
