Dietary Therapies for Preventing Myopia: Enhancing Eye Health through Nutrient-Rich Foods

December 14, 2023

To prevent the occurrence and progression of myopia, the food therapy selected focuses on supplying the necessary nutrients for the ciliary muscle and sclera in the eyes, enhancing the muscle strength of the ciliary muscle, and helping it to restore its inherent function; strengthening the toughness of the sclera and enhancing its resistance to external forces to prevent its expansion.

The following are dietary therapies for preventing myopia:

    1. Breakfast: 1-2 eggs and a cup of milk. Beat the eggs and mix well. When the milk (or milk powder) boils, pour in the eggs and simmer until cooked. Note that raw eggs are not easily digested and absorbed by the body. Also, do not overcook the eggs, as overcooking protein-rich foods can not only taste bad and be difficult to digest and absorb, but more importantly, it can cause abnormal calcium metabolism in the body and lead to calcium deficiency. Also, do not add sugar, as excessive sugar intake can disrupt calcium metabolism and lower blood calcium levels. If you want something sweet, add some honey instead. It should be noted that eggs and milk are both nutritious foods, rich in protein, fat, minerals, and vitamins. They are rich in calcium and phosphorus in minerals, and contain a variety of vitamins such as vitamin A, B1, and B2. These substances play a certain role in providing nutrition for the ciliary muscle, sclera, retina, optic nerve, and other tissues in the eyes. Through nutrition, the strength of the ciliary muscle and the toughness of the sclera can be enhanced.

    2. Pork liver soup ingredients: Wash the pork liver and slice it. Add an appropriate amount of water to a pot and cook the liver on low heat until cooked. Add fermented black beans, spring onion whites, and beaten eggs. Season with salt and monosodium glutamate. Note: Both eggs and pork liver are protein-rich foods. Pork liver contains a high amount of vitamin A, which can nourish the eyeballs and promote liver health and eye clarity. It is suitable for children and adolescents with myopia (can also be used for farsightedness diet therapy). Lamb liver, beef liver, or chicken liver can be used as substitutes for pork liver.

    3. Chicken liver soup ingredients: Wash and chop the chicken liver, blanch it in boiling water until it changes color and is no longer bloody, then add ginger, salt, and monosodium glutamate, mix well. Chicken liver has the highest vitamin A content, and this recipe can nourish the liver and promote eye health, suitable for various types of myopia.

    4. Wolfberry shredded pork ingredients: Wash lean pork and cut it into thin strips about 6 cm long, do the same with green bamboo shoots, and wash the wolfberries. When the oil is 70% hot, stir-fry the pork and bamboo shoots, add cooking wine, soy sauce, salt, and monosodium glutamate, add the wolfberries, stir-fry for a few seconds, and drizzle with sesame oil. Note: Wolfberries can nourish the liver and kidneys, and moisten the lungs and improve vision. Pork is rich in protein, which can nourish the various tissues in the eyes by supplementing the body.

    5. Walnut paste ingredients: 1 tablespoon of walnut paste, 1 tablespoon of black sesame powder, 1 cup of milk or soy milk, 1 tablespoon of honey.
