Natural Dietary Therapies for Summer Fever in Children: Effective and Economical Methods

Summer fever in children belongs to the category of "summer warmth" in traditional Chinese medicine. It is a feverish disease that is unique to infants and young children and is more common in children aged 6 months to 3 years. The main symptoms include prolonged fever, thirst, increased urination, sweating or reduced sweating. It is named due to its occurrence in the summer heat. The following dietary therapy methods are not only economical but also effective, and are worth a try.


Green bean and lotus seed porridge: 30g green beans, 50g lotus seeds (core removed), 50-100g glutinous rice, a little alum, appropriate amount of sugar. Cook the green beans first, add alum, then add lotus seeds and glutinous rice after they are cooked, cook until they become porridge, and add sugar for seasoning. Take it three times a day.

Lotus seed and Tai Zi Shen porridge: 15g lotus seeds, 10g Tai Zi Shen, 10g mung beans, 100g winter melon, 50g glutinous rice. Cook them together and consume as porridge.

Red date and mung bean porridge: 15 red dates, 10g mung beans, 30g glutinous rice. Cook them into a thin porridge and consume it in the morning and evening.

Winter melon and Coix seed porridge: 150g winter melon, 100g Coix seed, appropriate amount of rock sugar. After cooking the Coix seed, add winter melon and cook for 10 minutes, then add dissolved rock sugar and consume. It is suitable for children with summer fever and restlessness.

Huai Shan Yao porridge: 20g Huai Shan Yao, half a fresh lotus leaf, 15g mung beans, 15g Coix seed, 50g glutinous rice. Cook the first four ingredients with water, take 200ml of the concentrated liquid, and cook it with glutinous rice to make porridge.

Lotus leaf and lotus root porridge: Take a large fresh lotus leaf, 1 small section of fresh lotus root, 30g glutinous rice, appropriate amount of sugar. Boil the lotus leaf in 500ml of water, filter and take the juice. Wash the lotus root and cut it into small pieces, then cook it with glutinous rice and lotus leaf juice to make thin porridge, add sugar for seasoning, and consume it three times a day.

Lotus leaf and green bean porridge: Take a large fresh lotus leaf, 15 fresh bamboo leaves, boil them in water, take the juice, first cook 20g of green beans in the juice until they blossom, then add 30g of glutinous rice and cook until it becomes thin porridge, consume it in the morning and evening.

Chrysanthemum porridge: 50g glutinous rice, appropriate amount of rock sugar, cook them into porridge, when the porridge is almost cooked, add 6g of chrysanthemum (wrapped in cloth), and continue cooking for about 10 minutes. It can clear heat, relieve summer heat, and refresh the mind.

Lotus leaf and winter melon porridge: Take two fresh lotus leaves, wash them and boil them in about 500ml of water, filter and take the juice. Add 250g of winter melon and 30g of glutinous rice to the lotus leaf juice, cook it into thin porridge, and consume it in the morning and evening. It is suitable for children with persistent fever, thirst, and reduced urine output.

Silkworm cocoon and Shan Dou porridge: Take 10 silkworm cocoons, 10 red dates, 30g Chinese yam, 30g glutinous rice, appropriate amount of sugar. Boil the silkworm cocoons in 500ml of water, filter the liquid, remove the residue, remove the cores from the red dates, and add Chinese yam and glutinous rice to cook into thin porridge. Consume it in the morning and evening. It is suitable for children with low-grade fever, fatigue, poor appetite, and loose stools.

Qi-enhancing and heat-clearing porridge: Take 1g American ginseng, 10g Bei Sha Shen, 10g Shi Hu, 5g Zhimu, 30g glutinous rice. First, cook Bei Sha Shen, Shi Hu, and Zhimu in a cloth bag with water for 30 minutes, remove the residue and keep the juice. Then grind American ginseng into powder, cook it with glutinous rice in the medicinal juice, add sugar for seasoning, and consume it in the morning and evening. It is suitable for children with persistent fever, thirst, and little or no sweating.

Three Fresh Drink: 30g fresh lotus leaf, 30g fresh bamboo leaf, 30g fresh mint, boil them in water for about 10 minutes, add an appropriate amount of honey and mix well, cool it down and drink it as tea. It is suitable for children with persistent fever, restlessness, thirst, and reduced urine output.
